Surfdog’s 71 240

It has a 2.4 I’ll swap for mild 200 hpish 2800
It has a 5 speed
I’ll put in street cage(no sidebars)
Needs coil overs
Will use Datsun pick up 4w disc brakes
Electric fuel pump.
15 in wheels to fit brakes
Wheel flares (bolt on)
Full media blast strip, sheet metal and paint
Kirky seats and 5 pt harness
Quaife
Front sway bar
Remote oil filter
Gated oil pan

That’s the rough plan for now.

I haven't played with Webers for decades. :rofl2: Once set-up. They are sweet. But getting there can be a PITA sometimes.

You will need one of these to help balance them. I had a couple of them a while back.

Have one of these now.

I’ll have help setting them up. I am not at all up to speed on carbs.

...but I will be!

I had a '71 with a stroked 280z motor (3.0 liter) and triple 44 mikuni's. They were fairly easy to set up. Why did I ever get rid of that car? :mad:

... and yet all the exhaust hanger bolts still stripped. (Well most.)

I started with aftermarket badly heat corroded exhaust to test different ways of getting the fasteners apart without damage. I hope to reuse as many OEM fasteners as I can.

Rearranged shop to make room on parts shelves for all my disassembled bits.

Oh helll. That motor is good for another 100,000 miles. Just button it back up. :rofl2:

I’m going to get her torn down the rest of the way, milled out and Painted up nice and pretty. She’ll be making 250 hp in no time! Bored and stroked to 3.0, Webber’s cams! She’s a runner!

I’m thinking the “true 3.0” option with triple Webber’s 9.8-10 compression and a mild cam. I want good power but better street manners. Electric fuel pump and regular should make it a nice motor.

I'm looking at the 3.2 Big Bore. :rofl2:

The VQ350 making 490HP/330 Torque? :confused: Is it turbo'ed?

I’m taking all these numbers with a huge grain of salt. lol. I’ll obviously dyno tune this thing one day and post results. This is a long term project so... don’t hold your breath.

Need to port and polish the head, Unshroud the valves, etc. It is hard to find a good L28 head porter. They are getting up in the years.

Do you still have the stock carbs? If so, they can be tweaked to run extremely well if you have the older carbs. The new Datsun carbs sucked. That is what I had on my 1974 1/2 260z. I would suggest to stick with the stock L24 engine and build it properly while using the stock carbs. Guy in Atlanta could make those things run awesome.

I’m actually considering doing a mild refresh on the (non matching) 2.4 and building my 2.8 donor engine for racing.

The 2.4 could be my sons “learner motor”. A bit less power for a teenager and then we can have fun as another project down the road swapping in his “racer” 3 liter build. (It’s a bit easier on cash flow this way as well, as I’m planning for about a 50% possible “bloat” on my 25k ish build budget)

The old adage “twice as long and twice the price” sadly is very true.
