Shimming the 3.35 diff with Quaife. Fun

The other (spare) 3.55 diff is a spool (spool=welded and cheap diff) for hooning and maybe backup track use if I need a shorter gear for some reason)

I don’t remember which one came from the 240 and which from the diesel maxima. I’m guessing the taller gear came out of the diesel? Don’t recall.

Never easy. So time to shim the spindle.

In the mean time I’ll work on lightly porting but more importantly port matching my Webber intake manifold. (Fix core shift, clean up casting marks a bit and get the head and intake ports to line up a bit better.). It’s not totally necessary, but since we’re all apart anyhow... why not.

A stock diff can be pulled apart pretty easily, but the fat boy Quaife LSD won’t fit in or out with bearings pressed on, so we had to pull the side bearings in order to shim the drive spindle. (Sheesh!). What a PITA! (A bit of trial and error here)

Yes we’re guessing we need to add a 15/1000s shim to pull the spindle up a bit higher.

That will also likely mean more shims left to right to tighten up the lash a bit. It is at 4/1000 now which is on the tight side of perfect. This will probably loosen it up a bit which means I have to chase down some more shims. . It’s a bit of a chase your tail type excercise.

The cheap spool is just stock welded up. So I’m hoping will drop straight back in with little lash fiddling.

PLUG AND PLAY! (That never works out)

I was thinking .0001" to .00015", no more than .0002". Chasing your tail is right. Make one move on the pinion, end up making 10 moves on the ring.

Building this 3.2 motor, I bought this e88 head to replace my e31.

Supposedly the e88 will flow better on the L28 stroker block. (According to the guy who’s helping me design my 3.2). They look IDENTICAL to me.

I hear the combustion chamber is better and the compression is better. I honestly can see any difference. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b2e9114a01.jpg

Once I clean them both up, I suspect they will be identical. I e heard the valve seats are different?? Who knows.

Stub axle refurbishment.

I could run CV axels which are stronger and lighter but these will probably suffice and CV conversion runs about 1100 bucks.

I’ll swap them in if these detonate

The main hangup has been trying to source just the right O rings for the slider bearing caps.

Also, long awaited replacements for my rusted our side rails have come in. They are MUCH nicer than the ones I ordered in a few weeks ago. (Strangely the price is still a question mark... long story). The floor plans will hopefully be in very soon. Then, body repair can begin!!

I've seen some CV's blown apart too. :icon14: I changed the front axles on my Power Wagon front u-joint to Indy style CV's. The axles came from RCV. $2,600 both front axles.
1st pic you can see the u-joint. The 2nd pic is the CV joint.

Did you put the grease fittings in the correct position? They have to be under the compression side side of the yoke.

"Many times harder than it should have been due to my basic baffonary."

That statement hit real close to home for me.

Covid stopped the world but we’ll begin body panel replacement and wheel flare building this week. Also my bored block is back from the machine shops as well as my balanced crank and heads with mild cam. I’ll start building the motor in a week or two.

My hood was pretty bad so after months this beautiful thing has arrived.

I’ll probably put about 10k into body work to make her way better than new. That will include a full SCCA type cage.

The parts bin is just about complete. This body work has been in line for several months. It’s good to have it rolling again.
