Thanks for the heads up, but I'm pretty committed to mastering CF. If I stop making attempts, all the previous work will amount to a failure instead of a learning opportunity. I'll also likely make a small batch for sale.

I ordered a 16" SPAL pusher fan on Black Friday with the funds from my recent Z1 high capacity diff cover (more on that in a min). Now, if anyone runs across this before they order a SPAL fan... please know that they do not include anything but the fan. I get it why they do it. I would have been more than happy to order everything at the same time. My cat inspector even tried to assist with finding missing parts. Nothing turned up; and Dolce was very thorough.
Now why would I sell my high capacity diff cover? Well, the plan is to swap the rear end over to a Winters Quick Change like what Chris Forsberg runs. That's a next winter deal after everything is running. ... That and a roll cage. All that is fine because the power level can not be turned up due to safety concerns. Having 1000+ hp on tap sounds fun out of gate if you live in YouTube (any thing less is slow). I simply will need time to re-learn the car and slowly ratchet up the power. So that's the future path. What is more concerning to me right now is trying to figure out where to mount my 3qt Accusump. Ideally I would tie directly into the oil cooler line running to the engine. The oil would be filtered and cooled. I'll need to go to the shop and walk around the with the Accusump trying to pack another pound of sh1t in. If I could get it in right near the oil cooler, that would be the dream. I really doubt it though. It may end up where the battery was. So yeah. That's the struggle. Figured out my mount, and it's not going where I said it was in my video (from a few days ago). The Accusump was tapped in the factory holes. I'm making an aluminum mount that will use 3/8 - 16 hardware in the tapped holes. I also have a dimple die set coming so the mount can be strengthened and lightened. If this doesn't make sense... Stay tuned to see it come together... Or a big fail. One of the two Getting the mount done with a steady hand using hand tools. Well, it was awesome until it wasn't. The center section measurement was off. Need to redo it nd mount completed. This one works. How hard is two bends and a few holes, right? My Harbor Freight break isn't exactly perfect so I had to open up the bolt holes a bit. I'd rather do that than make a third mount. Last picture shows the mount location. I need to trim more aluminum off, rivnut the mount to the air cowl and dimple die the main mount area tomorrow... Maybe the day after... ---------------------------- Truth be told here... I was PISSED OFF when I had to create the second mount. I would have created video but I was 12hrs deep into the custom bracket Sunday. The speed difference between the first mount and the second mount was nuts. I was able complete the latest one between 7:30 and 10:00pm. What I didn't show on IG was the first mount that I was attempting to work out. It was abandoned in favor of the latest mount. Then I tried cutting out two circles to weld to some metal. After making a couple sets of circles, it was decided to make a paper template for a one piece mount. One last thing. On the failed mount, I even went to the extent of tig welding the ends to a flat piece of an aluminum. That didn't work because of the gap and how the ends cracked off from flattening to make another attempt to break the aluminum to a 90. It was a long weekend! technically four iterations of a mount. Again, the pictures are below are in the exact chronological order. |

Prepped for surgery. Sanded with 150 and applied 2 coats of epoxy primer. Sprayed a light coat and then put down a heavy coat. Tossed the fenders in the corner for the night to dry(ish). It's 20 degrees here. --------------------------------------------------- Panel bond was going to be to secure the vent to the fender. The panel bond would have been permanent (nearly impossible to remove) and would also prevent any rust situation on the chipped paint. After a chat with the fella that made the Finite Element vents, I found out that the vents will only be made in a large batch. I read into that and figured the likely hood of the vents being reproduced were really low. That information changed my mind on using panel bond. Instead, 3M tape. I keep flipping back and forth about using drilling the fenders and using button head bolts. I'm just not sure. If I do it, I will get some titanium hardware (eventually). |

Finally done. I attempted to solely use 3m tape but it would have popped off on a warm day. I was able to get it to lay mostly flat with some clamping force; of which, one clamp was not on the back side of the vent all the way. I now have some impromptu bead rolling in a spot I didn't really want.
With that said, I went out to the hardware store and picked up some button head screws and a new pack of drill bits. Turns out that the Ryobi bits SUCK. Their titanium coated bits dulled really fast and one broke free from the drill bit mount.... specifically the 1/4" bit I needed to finish the job (last three holes). I hogged out the hole with the size smaller to get the job done. Cutting the holes had me on edge on this task because Finite Element isn't really making these vents anymore. It would have been a double whammy if this got botched. Big holes in fenders, 600 vents toasted and unable to get new ones (not that I would want to pay 600 right now). I didn't have to do the vents right now.... but... I really wanted a change of pace. Besides, I'm still waiting on a handful of parts right now. specifically a rubber fitting that goes around my SPAL fan so that I can mount it with out the blades hitting the radiator. Speaking of the radiator... I haven't heard back from CSF on any sort of sponsorship (not free parts, I said I would buy them). I guess that option can fade off into the sunset. They have their authentic time attack car (Evo) for advertising anyway. Like I said... I was apprehensive about it anyway. Lastly, my pie cutting jig from LPS Fab came in. Now the cold and hot side can be wrapped up. I took a week off of work between Christmas and New Years to specifically knock that out. There all hands on deck at Auto Dynamix working on personal projects too, 3 or 4 other race cars. The mould of the vent wasn't exactly perfect. It was enough where it was constantly trying to pull away. I think thicker 3M tape would have been fine but I wanted it flush as possible.

After a month of waiting, the SPAL 1/2" gasket and swirl pot came in. I started off with the SPAL fan mount because of limited time. It's also nice to heave a simple quick win. I think I did that on Saturday. Kind of simple. the shroud needed to be disassembled to get the back side of the zip ties through. -Edit - You may wonder why I waited for the spacer... With out the rubber spacer the fan would hit the radiator. I also forgot to mention that the fan will blast air over the oil cooler and power steering cooler (of which I don't have... I was waiting to hear back from CSF.)
Yesterday (Sunday) I worked on cutting the swirl pot so that it could be mounted. Doing it a second time was fairly easy because I already know it will mount correctly. My 3" air grinder worked awesome on this piece. Well, it was awesome until a little chunk of disk broke free and hit my knuckle. It hurt... but lucky I've been up on all the safety equipment and wore gloves. Otherwise it would have been a bloody mess. The picture I took where I'm looking at the camera was almost directly after the hit. Note the double eye protection too! Last on deck was the Accusump mount. Who would have known a mount could be such a time sink. The mount was measured, punched and drilled for mounts/dimple holes. After that, A hydraulic press was used to press the aluminum. Excess aluminum was then removed to allow for better airflow. Airflow will go around the Accusump fairly easy because it is round. If the mount was not cut up, air would hit the square edge. It would actually make downforce... but air evacuation in that area is more important. Attaching the mount to the shroud was fairly easy using 1/4 rivets 1/2" long. The awesome part about the rivet was that it hooked right into the square stock that is inside of the L shaped aluminum. Remember my first time TIG welding aluminum? Yeah, that square stock. The accusump mount went into those two pieces of aluminum stock and it's attached to the left and right frame rail. Last edited by gbrettin; 12-14-2020 at 02:03 PM. |

You got to do something about your alignment. You got too much camber and toe on the left side.
