With the turbos, timing kit and long block arriving this week I decide to get off my *** an prep the bay.
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...9af801c61.jpeg Sanded, Primed and taped off http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...c795fb68f.jpeg We used some PPG single stage white. Ended up with 4 coats from the pint of paint. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6c3ccab82.jpeg Turned out great if I do say so myself. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...a753b33be.jpeg Had some extra paint so we sprayed the silver parts of the engine cover white to match |

Finally got the weld bungs in to finish most of the catch can/coolant reservoir combo. I am gonna test fit the front support and hood again to see if by chance it will clear a 3" tall filter. If it wont I'll just do the scotchbrite/lawn mower foam filter so it's low profile. |
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...38378a72b.jpeg
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...fdc45d734.jpeg Double checked the clearance with the hood and it will clear a 3” tall filter. |

http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...-51-11-am.jpeg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...-50-59-am.jpeg Can't wait to put these greens to the test on VP's MS109 fuel. I don't have the injector or fuel pump to run the X85 right now. I'll upgrade those before the year is out but no reason to delay the car when it will be on pump gas 95% of the time http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...-47-54-am.jpeg Complete timing kit from Z1 The container with the motor in it should be delivered today or tomorrow so monday most likely till I can start swapping timing covers etc:happydance: |

Oil pressure sensor/turbo feed block freshly powder coated and re-mocked up on the old motor http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...3a6301311.jpeg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...8adf48f97.jpeg The catch can powder coated and in place I've ordered new flywheel bolts, pilot bushing and CJ-M's PCV valve delete fittings along with a CMAK from conceptZ. The CMAK for the OS giken ended up being out of stock but that's fine. In my infinite impatience I've broken the upper oil pan hopefully i can get the engine out of the shipping container before friday to see if one is on there or if i have to order a new one. |
|
That's so exciting and so intensely frustrating. I'd be hooking chains to everyone else's crap and dragging it out of the way.

So this is my first real, professionally built, proper machine shop engine build so all the things that might seem normal are just cool as hell for me to see in person knowing it's for me. Pardon me while I geek out
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7286011985.jpg Crank oil galleys were cleaned out and the holes tapped and plugged. Not something that the machine shops on island do. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...4446432376.jpg Intake port shot. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...d3362c376.jpeg Exhaust port shot (sorry for sideways) http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7286011986.jpg Best pic I could manage of a piston and rod http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7286011993.jpg Tapped the throttle body coolant port on the head crossover to plug it http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7286011996.jpg I got the VVEL motors, knock sensors and the coolant crossover pipe installed with new gaskets Tonight I'll get the exhaust studs out of the head and install the turbo adapters |
New oil pan ordered from conceptz. Will be able to seal up the bottom end next week when I get back.
Powder coater says he’s waiting on a shipment and can’t coat the timing covers till the end of the month. Bummer |
Cjm?

I could have welded it and had the sealing surface milled but I decided for $265 it wasn't worth it. |
Got the stuff yesterday, can’t wait to get back home and start wrenching

http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2683593775.jpg Filter on and clears everything http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2941404229.jpg Passenger side turbo oil feed http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2455191569.jpg My oil distribution block. I think I may have gotten too long a line (36in) for the drivers side turbo. At this point there's really nothing more to do but keep my patience in check until the powder coat guy gets everything in stock. |
It does look like that oil line would be uncomfortably close to your front sway bar.

I was thinking to get the fittings and line to make it short myself......maybe i need to do more than think about that now

I have an adapter for an oil pressure gauge sensor in the stock oil pressure port. Was always uncomfortable with the finger-breadth of clearance between the sensor at the end of the adapter and the sway bar. If I recall correctly, the sway bar, when the Z is on jacks, will be right where the metal braid begins on the side of your line that goes into the OEM port. Just by eyeballing it, I'd be concerned about clearance with the distribution block too. If I get the Z up on the QJ this weekend I'll try and get measurements from the sway bar to the bottom edge of the upper oil pan for you.
|
That would be great!
Push comes to shove I’ll get the cj-m adapter |
Aaaaaand they’re out of stock :(

Yeah he's helped me in the past with the fuel system and drag tire setup info.
I did email him right after I saw they were out of stock so hopefully they aren't that far off the horizon. |
No firm date on if they are going back into production. I'll have to wait till it's back in the car to figure out what it will clear etc.
In related news the CMAK should ship out early next week. |

This was one of the lines I didn't get to test before. Clearly that won't fit http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074354.jpg I've ordered a 6AN male to female 90* fitting in hopes it will clear. I can also cut at least 1/8 out of the center of the fitting for a smidge more room http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...233b8cf51.jpeg Passenger actuator in the stock location with the compressor reclocked to bring the outlet closer to the engine mount (frame rail clearance). The actuator can't stay where it is for clearance reasons http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074356.jpg That angle obviously wont work either http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...a6d46ffe5.jpeg One additional hole later and the actuator is in it's new home...almost http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074352.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074353.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...24f5e9f68.jpeg I'll be modifying the bracket to bolt to the tapped boss perpendicular to it http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...9194075177.jpg I've got one hell of a pie cut fight to get the intake to snake through that opening between the ac compressor and the ac line. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...c98361521.jpeg My new oil feed solution. I had this piece before but I am not sure if I'll be able to plug in the bottom connector. I'll figure that out when the motor is in. |
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074359.jpg
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...6815074360.jpg Well that's sorted. I forgot the 2.5" piping at home so no pizza slices today for the drivers side intake |
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7443774480.jpg
My coolant return solution. All of the coolant lines are now assembled, just need to sort out the passenger side block feed and thats that. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...3147391064.jpg Passenger side intake sorted as well. I'll get the CMAK later on today from Fedex so the plan of action is to get the motor with the turbos permanently on and plumbed put back in the car. I can do the timing covers etc with the motor in no problem. I am choosing to do it this way so I can start to fab the downpipes and exhaust. That way once the timing stuff is installed I wont be delayed in doing all the small things to start up. |
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...alve-cover.png
So if you look at the valve cover breather ports, the actual hole is no larger than 3/16". http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7257459793.jpg I still need to deburr but what a difference it makes trying to blow air through it. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...7906029598.jpg Drivers side intake is finally "done". It only required one pizza slice and 2 strategic dent's for the engine mount bracket and a nub on the ac compressor |
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...4622251096.jpg
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...4622251095.jpg Horrible pictures but the last coolant fitting finally clears. In related news the garage construction should start early august.:happydance: |
New garage

So when I installed the first CMAK my dumb *** decided to put red loctite on the throw out bearing sleeve bolts, which for reference are allen head M6. I had to drill them out to remove the original.
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0973628555.jpg In a successful "do not try this at home" moment I welded a nut to each of the broken bolts with my eyes closed. I usually keep my welding helmet in the daily but I forgot it at work yesterday. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0973628556.jpg With those gone http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0973628557.jpg That OS Giken ready CMAK tho I noticed that it's still weeping some transmission fluid from the bottom 2 bolts this morning. I'll have to drain the transmission, brake clean the holes and use some sealant on those bolts. Sounds easy enough till I realized we are out of Motul at work. Valvoline GL4 MTF it is. |
Well I finally got the covers installed. But even that wasn't without panic mode
So you'd think if you are assembling cylinder heads for these as a builder you'd know the tensioner's need to go on before the cam cap/vvel ladder assembly goes on http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...5347510270.jpg So I can tell you who wasn't about to pull all of THAT back apart. The rear bolts for both tensioner's were easy to get to from the valve cover side and I used 2 bolts a few threads shorter and shaved the heads a bit and I wiggled them in for the front. The drivers side was NOT an easy task to tighten. Loctite was used. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...5347510271.jpg I got this far before I realized something was up http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...5347510268.jpg Not sure why I asked for white on the gear cover pieces. It looked good in my mind, still kinda does. Once the motor is in it won't be so ...in your face? http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...8449584136.jpg Another shot of the covers in better lighting http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...5347510269.jpg Finalized everything on the passenger side turbo/plumbing wise. I had to seal the compressor housings old school style with a tiny bead of RTV since the o rings weren't there. Plan is to get it installed before I go on vacation next week. The hard part is going to be getting it out of the house and to the car. I see a ply wood sheet rail road in my future |
I'm having a little more trouble than I'd like to admit with this oil feed for the drivers side turbo. The issue is revolving around me trying to feed oil to 3 things from 1 source.
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1203e0f3d.jpeg With both the stock and innovate oil pressure sensors on this neither can plug in when oriented to clear the motor and alternator http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...e6c44a553.jpeg I am bringing the serpentine belt home tonight to see how far I can bend the distribution block bracket to clear the sway bar http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...4f54daf79.jpeg Looking at the assembly last night I decided I will get the idler pulley bracket and tensioner coated as well. |

http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...-21-10-am.jpeg Got the boost source nipple removed from the drivers side turbo and plugged. Gonna install the intake manifolds and get the vacuum plumbing finalized for everything tonight. |
Because I can't leave well enough alone I'm making a new power steering reservoir.
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2410756125.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2410756124.jpg |

http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2449718294.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...2410756151.jpg I did cut the can off the brackets and rotate it so the Vibrant faces forward. Will add a 10an and 6an male bung on the bottom so I can run push lock fittings to the cooler and pump |
Continuing where I left off with the power steering reservoir
http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...9903302691.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0388291657.jpg I didn't want to risk any sort of cavitation having both the feed and return right next to each other or having the pressure side for the fluid point straight up so I bent some tubing and welded that to the 6an bung before I welded that to the bottom of the can. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0388291654.jpg Fire sleeve all the hoses! http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0388291653.jpg More fire sleeve and vacuum hose routing. The drivers side 8mm port by the throttle body is going to feed the FPR and boost gauge. You can barely make out the 1/4" line running to the boost control solenoid http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...9903302696.jpg Used the old Evap solenoid mount to bolt the MAC 3 port to the intake manifold. That is fed from the 8mm port on the passenger side throttle body http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0089617455.jpg Left some slack on this line just in case. I need to order some fire sleeve for that. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...0388291650.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...58192b377.jpeg I have some insulated aluminum P clamps on their way. I am thinking to make an aluminum stand off that uses those 2 valve cover bolts to secure all those hoses to. http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...8ce92b2c5.jpeg Removed the steel nipple from the cross over pipe, drilled and tapped it to return coolant from the passenger turbo http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...acc27bdeb.jpeg This Tee is coolant returning from the drivers side turbo as well as the thermostat bypass line I've got the Z1 heater hose and PS hose kits on the way along with a summit 7 row oil cooler and required fittings. Since the rabbit hole valve cover fitting guy seems to be be unresponsive I ordered some 3/8barb to 8an male fittings to have machined to epoxy in there. When I get back next weekend I'll swap out the drivers side turbo feed line for a shorter one and I dare say it.....It'll be ready to drop in :happydance: |
Well I am battling a cold or sinus infection but, nothing clears that up like sweating it out they say?
A couple of buddies swung by and got the engine muscled out of the house and to the work pad http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...4905178110.jpg Had to get a shot of the OS Giken http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...3296755791.jpg Voila! It's in! That was MUCH easier said than done, we ended up having to disconnect the transmission mount (the drive shaft was off already) and move that back a few inches, mount the motor in place and then wiggle the transmission. Since we did that I swapped in the Z1 transmission mount at the same time http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1088027769.jpg The drivers side is snuggly http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1088027764.jpg The oil distribution block clears http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1088027767.jpg Hello CJM rails http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1088027765.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/sirni...1088027766.jpg Epoxied some 8an push lock hose ends into the other vent tubes on the valve cover. Well that's a mile stone for me. I have a couple 45* bends i need to cut up to start on the down pipes. The intakes and intercooler plumbing I pick up from the powdercoater tomorrow. |
