Well step 1
Don’t buy used turbos. If you do send them to a reputable shop to get checked out and /or rebuilt.

Step 2 I would say regardless if you’re doing a motor break in at the same time as going turbo or not, get a filter for the feed line(s) that’s easily accessible to clean

I got the turbos out yesterday, man that job is much easier with a lift. The turbo that failed came with a crack in the exhaust manifold that was repaired before but needed repairing again. That repair did not hold, it is not leaking but I am not going to reuse that turbo as a core, this means I need to get new cores.

I was going full "cupcakez" for a little but had to chill out and really think about the situation objectively.

I do not have the fuel system, clutch nor tire to support more than 650-700 on race gas at the moment. The lower end of that is attainable with the stock GTR turbo's. I am not in the position to drop another $4k+ on cores and upgrades at the moment.

So the way forward is this:
Stock turbo's
Redo oil feed lines to include oil filters from Turbosmart
Redo turbo side of coolant fittings (IHI setup differs from the Garrett)
Enjoy the car again

I am a little disappointed to say the least but seeing as it will be on pump gas 90% of the time (no E85 at the pump here) it will be in the 500-550 range anyway

Maybe next year some time I'll do the fuel system and turbo's over.

Glad you're staying positive. You learned a hell of a lot and we all did too! I, for one, would like to thank you for thoroughly documenting this endeavor.

Thanks man. The situation isn't ideal but no need to rage quit or anything, **** happens in the car modding life.

This was (is) the fastest thing I have owned and I am pretty much hooked on the power level it was at. The question is now, do I put my marriage to the test and send the turbo's to my wife when she goes away next weekend

Got back in last night from Miami with everything. I don't think I can afford to take a day off to finish the car until next thursday though.

LOL. I got permission to use the work lift saturday after work so I am hoping to get the turbos on and the motor back in then. The rest of the smaller **** will have to wait.

Speaking of small ****. The turbosmart oil pressure regulator is tiny lol.

I have it mounted up so I can run the new oil feed lines.

So this isn't necessary if you are using the stock height engine mounts. The Z1 mounts I have are cranked up all the way for a little better steering shaft clearance. What this does unfortunately is put the compressor outlet right up next to the frame instead of mostly in the gap between the frame rail and subframe.

Some 2" welded to the compressor outlet, it also drops the outlet down about a half inch. This get's past the choke point between the frame and the engine mount.

My new sensor feed block. I will be feeding this from the M8x1.25mm port on the passenger side of the block. I am doing it this way so I have sensors being fed from one location and the turbos being fed from the original oil pressure sensor port.

Installing the aftermarket actuators onto the stock turbos I noticed that the drivers side actuator rod was easy to pull vs the passenger side. Not sure if that has anything to do with the failure but the stock actuators went back on.

The drivers side requires modification.

Look's like I have all the small stuff out of the way and will just need to redo the lines on the day.

What a long night.

Pulled the motor, then got to work redoing all the coolant lines and oil feeds for the turbos. Luckily I only had to completely remake one coolant line.

So I made a miscalculation. I needed to drop the compressor outlet down a full 2". I am trying to find some 2.5" today to make the drop down.

Everyone in their home

Left to do
Bleed brakes
Fix drivers side hot pipe
Install drivers side cold pipe
Install shifter
Install downpipes & mid pipe

Everything is good to go! Drove it home gently, had a heart attack seeing some smoke but remembered one down pipe was full of oil.

Will get the AC recharged tomorrow and back to enjoying it

Back into tuning and logging, still on wastegate and that is only 9psi. My gosh it feels so slow. Can't wait to get some more boost under it's belt and wake it up

I think I'm just gonna give up on this mod life.

Parked the car to run into somewhere to get some food. Come out and it won't start.

Both key lights are on, stays stuck in the ON position. Battery is tested as good, changed the battery in the keyfob.

Wonder if there is a way to disable the immobilizer.
