Talk me out of painting my Nismo...or NOT?

I just talked to my neighbor, owns a ton of bodyshops and hooking me up on painting my rims black on my silver nismo..

He just finished fixed one of my employees cars, painted it flat black and it looks awesome (Its an older full size hummer)

He said he could paint my car flat black if I like for a reasonable amount. I'm seriously thinking about it. Doing the rims flat black, the car as well and leaving the carbon fiber exposed.

Any feedback from the board? My wife said I'm nuts but it is my car and she already had her cars sorted out so my turn...

What do you think, crazy?

frost 12-03-2009 07:17 PM

do it

Danny3.7 12-03-2009 07:18 PM

I like the idea! but.. your car is going to get hot a heck inside and out.

370Zsteve 12-03-2009 07:18 PM

wick it up, Bubba! Black is Beautiful :happydance:

motoextreme 12-03-2009 07:21 PM

There's this porsche that hangs out in Malibu by our Corp office, flat black and its awesome! There was a CLS for sale at phillips auto in Newport a month or so again, same deal...looks really cool.

The hard part is painting a brand new car but what the hell right? I almost bought the black but the swirls and upkeep drive me nuts, I have to think flat black would be easy...

Danny3.7 12-03-2009 07:24 PM

can someone do a photoshop? I assume you would black out the headlights too?

frost 12-03-2009 07:24 PM

too much talking, do it.

motoextreme 12-03-2009 07:30 PM

F IT!!

I just called, said he can likely do it next week. As long as its done before the Fontana meet I'm in!!

This is pretty crazy but I'm pretty amped up about it. Should have pictures in a week or two. First flat black nismo...gotta love it.

Thanks for the feedback

And yes, I'll pull out the lights and have them blacked out too. Not sure what do to with those new JDM lights.

Double hot with the JDM tails I bet.

theDreamer 12-03-2009 07:34 PM

That photo is from bullit also, from a random thread where someone asked for a photoshop of a matte black, gloss black, and carbon fiber black.

lol, put a little american flag sticker on the rear side

darkROAM_1 12-03-2009 07:38 PM

Just be sure the registration and insurance is updated when you paint it. Nothing major, just in case for random annoyances.

I so want mine a matte black. If you've done any powder coating, I want a "solar black" style finish on the pain and solar black wheels. It's basically a very sheen, almost metallic flat black. Wish I had pics of it. It's also the most expensive "flat black" as far as powder coating is concerned >.<

All-in-all, post pics when it's done so I can drool over it :D

370Zsteve 12-03-2009 07:38 PM

Possible it could be mistaken for this bad boy if the light is right

motoextreme 12-03-2009 07:41 PM

HOLLY SH#$!!

That's it!!!!

Gloss Black wheels, that same flat black. blacked out headlights and door handles done too.

Wish me luck! After the car show tonight I'm pulling the car apart, going to do it in panels rather then a whole shot. Same way I did my 67 camaro, looks better that way

370Zsteve 12-03-2009 07:46 PM

Good luck Moto! In for pics!

frost 12-03-2009 07:48 PM

Luck not needed, this is an obvious win.

It will looks awesome no doubt. But, I have to just put in a little word of caution. When I had custom paint done on my Corvette, I really wanted the flat black. The paint shop owner talked me out of it. If anything ever scratches it, you can't buff it out, as the paint will become glossy and it will show fingerprints and other little things really badly.

That said, go for it! I have been thinking about a flat black wrap for mine as well.

crand002 12-03-2009 08:52 PM

Do flat black vinyl instead.

NewlyIMPORTed 12-03-2009 09:38 PM

i wouldnt do it just flat black your wheels and keep it silver. resale would be a b***h

motoextreme 12-04-2009 01:00 AM

I dont care about Resale...I'm paying this bad boy off pretty quick. Its a keeper!

Just came home to my new Red Radiator hoses, my new carbon door sills and some other box...not sure what it is yet.

I'm doing it.

So I know this is the Z forum but I just got back from the LA Auto Show preview, cool thing about the preview its catered, you can sit in the cars and all the drinks you can handle. Unfortunately this year, Ferrari and Lambo didnt show but there's some sick rides! If you don't mind I'm going to post the pictures in an album, wait till you see some of these bentleys, Custom cars etc... I took pictures of them all so I'll add them right now.

Here's the crazy thing. I run into my neighbor that I haven't seen for about 6 months. He said what do you think about that new SLS Benz with the Gull wing doors? I said its SICK...son of a gun bought one, they deliver it next year. I feel about 1" tall right now...HAHAH

So....check out my new album in a few minutes, I kept it ONLY cars, no pics of my ugly mug.

If I can't get my car back by Fontana I'll have to put the paint off for a week but it will be done soon!!

Thanks again!

schrute 12-04-2009 03:03 AM

Can't wait to see this.

In for the pics of WIN.

motoextreme 12-05-2009 01:02 AM

So good news and bad...

Good is I think we worked out a fair price. I'm an idiot though.. When I bought my Z from Covina Nissan they only had black and I made them trade another dealer for this silver one.

Now I'm going flat black I really should of bought the damn black one, that way this paint would of been MUCH less as I wouldnt have to worry about the jambs and such, that's where the $$ is. I'm infamous for pissing away money...oh well.

Bad news (other then being an idiot) is he can start Monday but I wont have it back for about 10 days. I'm really looking forward to the Fontana meet so I'm going to wait until that following Monday to get started.

Going to do the lights as well, I'm really on the fence about the LED's...really dont like the flash but they do make it look a bit different.

I really want to shave the handles, don't much care for the stock ones but I love the keyless function. Wonder if you could just put that button somewhere else. Anyone, powdercoated the stock handles, suppose I could do that.

Trying to get it all sorted now so the car is only out of commish for a little while. Any thoughts?

PS. Definitely gloss black wheels, black lights, a little more carbon and all else flat black..

motoextreme 12-05-2009 01:29 AM

Sorry for the extra post but anyone know about filling in the two spots where the nissan badges are? Bodyshop guy sounded a little concerned about it but the painter wasn't.

Has anyone done it? I'd have to think I'm not the first...I'm trying to find pics but most appear to be aftermarket bumpers.

Thanks!

darkROAM_1 12-05-2009 05:43 PM

There could be 3 ways to do it. One is the obvious tons of filler. The other would be some smooth fiberglass work. And the third would be cut it out, and have some plastic welding done w/ a smooth piece of plastic and still a little fiberglass to hold it all together.

Then again, it's not impossible to have those painted either. Maybe a flat black w/ gloss black letter on the "NISSAN". and Gloss black 370 Z :D

motoextreme 12-05-2009 05:51 PM

That's a STRONG suggestion! I really don't want to hide that it's a Z so powdercoat them to match the wheels so it's a bit more subtle!

It's on!!!!

Thanks man. Last little thing, thinking these JDM lights may be too bright when it's all wrapped up. Worst case, I'll see if Marco can paint them inside too. Not doing LEDs, think I'll just smooth out the dimples. Have to take one more look at those LEDs before I pull the trigger

thks again man

I'd vote no LED's for a matte black, you want the subtle aggressive look and the LED's are not subtle.

370zdub 12-05-2009 06:46 PM

In for the WIN! I'm so excited to see this...

Thanks guys...100%, no LEDS. Taking it to the body shop the minute I'm done with Fontana!

Feel like taking it in Monday.... Would I still be allowed in if I don't bring my Z? HAHAHA....I really dont want to wait!!!

Mike 12-06-2009 11:18 AM

Don't shave the doors, just have them paint the handles to match. I actually think gloss black on the Nissan hamburgers would look good on a flat black car.

Also, perhaps instead of LED tails, just have them tint yours while they are at it.

I had my handles painted and my tails tinted and I think the same would look great on yours too.
