Someone recommend a nice dash cam that isn't a go-pro?

Finally got around to installing the one I bought and it doesn't do half of what I thought it would do. Kinda pissed but oh well.

Features I'm looking for:
-Camera HAS ITS OWN BATTERY that lasts for more than 5 minutes. Due to the location of the Z's cigarette lighter adapter, running around with it plugged in really isn't feasible without looking trashy.

-Some sort of auto-cloud upload capability would be ideal.

-Not super obvious/intrusive

-Long recording time

-Motion activated

I guess I can just buy another Go-Pro if worse comes to worse but I really don't need all the bells and whistles it has.

Mark, I was thinking about the Contour a while back and learned they were going out of business. So I kept looking and found the Sony Action Cam. Great image stabilization, relatively small footprint and GPS tracking with map overlay capability make it a great track day camera. You can control it from your smart phone (I know it works with the iPhone) the one I have requires a case for using in rainy conditions, but the new version allows for a good level of water resistance that doesn't mind a little rain. I also picked up the license plate relocation kit and camera mount. It takes the standard mount and not the GoPro mount that Ptuning in Manassas sells.

Check out the WASP. JVC also has a nice one.

Sony action can HDR as 100v.

What did you get and why are you disappointed?

-Battery: for any dashcam, you can get a battery/power pack which will extend the use without relying on car's battery. I see no point to this since I get power from the car directly.

-recording time depends on your settings and memory card.

-I personally dont know of any dashcam that has auto backup to cloud/online storage. main reason is the amount of data that needs to be constantly uploaded I assume. There needs to be a dedicated connection for when you are not around i.e. tethering with your phone.

There are some dashcams that offer WiFi backup of selected videos(not all video or constant backup)
Wiring a dashcam to fusebox is easy. you can also pay someone $50 to do it for you and hide all wires

What is your main purpose? recording at the track or safety or other?

dmhenderson 09-12-2014 08:46 AM

Both. Was looking for a swiss army knife solution that works as a recorder (both audio and video), theft deterrent etc.

From my research as I just ordered a GoPro Hero3+ Silver yesterday after finding an awesome deal. I would look at the Drift Ghost as it is a very strong competitor to the GoPro and has some features the GoPro doesn't. Unfortunately there isn't one that will meet all your needs.

It is hard to balance all those things from one camera, I have a blackvuew that I put on mostly for safety reasons...it is not as stealth as I would like but surprisingly not many ppl notice it, it records video and sound
