Actually I think I will just take it off and sell it. Not gonna track my Z ever again and I could use the cash for my house purchase. i will still need your help for this Rob. If anyone wants a 34 row Z1 oil cooler kit, let me know.

there's a ton factors that play into it though, wouldnt you think?

Me personally, from what I've seen, If your oil temp is atleast 170 degrees, you're good. Even with the block off plate on or off, and driving on the highway at 55 degrees or more (outside temperature). You should be anywhere from 170 to 180 degrees, all day.

Right now, Bobo, you're right, the block off plate should be on. But my general rule of thumb is to watch your oil temp when your block off plate is off.

180-210 is certainly a nominal temperature. Any lower, and you start running into viscosity issues w/ your oil (that is, it's TOO viscous, and can cause premature wear). You can even go up to 230-240 without issue. I wont even move my plate from 100% coverage until it's north of 70-80 degrees, and to be honest, I see no reason to even budge it unless I know Im going to be driving hard for a while. I left it at 100% for one of our cruises, I just didn't drive 100% the whole time lol. No issues.

Point is, unless you are creeping past 230+ and it's still climbing, you shouldn't be worried.

XwChriswX 01-13-2014 05:24 PM

I still have some of the aluminum left over from when I made the full cover plate... was thinking about trimming a piece down to make a 50% cover plate for summer/runs.

Only question is, is it worth the hassle to swap? :icon17:

Good stuff man, thanks for the insight.

Where is oil temp measured in our cars and how much different might oil temps be in other parts of the motor?

eastwest2300 01-13-2014 09:29 PM

one of your gauges on the top of your dash is your oil temp.

It's really just a function of wear, that you need to be worried. Oil lubricates optimally in the 180-230 degree range, give or take. Less than 180, and the oil can be too viscous and cause wear on your parts. Too hot, the oil loses it's ability to properly lubricate, and becomes too "loose". You want to keep it around 200, ideally.

Yes, I understand. I wasn't pushing back, I was just curious. I'm wondering how oil temp changes as it moves through the motor.

Agreed. This all gave me assurance that
- oil cooler reasonably justified for my style of driving
- block off plate a good idea
- I can now control over heating and under cooling
- I spent too much time in grad school and not enough time in the school of hard knocks (where they teach practical stuff).

I'm thinking of going with a fur covered block off plate - sassy, yet functional.

a fur covered block off plate...hmmm :icon08:

Good morning all!

I have a favor to ask.

Does anyone have a spare set of door handles that I can borrow(or rent) for a few weeks? I have a new front bumper (stock, but I'm thinking about adding a lip) that I am having painted. I want to have my door handles painted as well, but since mine is a daily driver, I would like to have a set of handles to drop off to get painted. I'll take mine off an put (very carefully) the spare set on my car, have mine painted and replace them and return the spare set to it's rightful owner.

Thanks

You're probably going to have to scour the for sale section or just pick up an extra set of handles new and then sell them on the for sale section. The latter is what I ended up doing. You can get a pair off ebay for about $75-80 if I remember correctly.
