I am not a lawyer, but I think transport across state lines is fine so long as you follow a few guidelines like separating your ammo from your guns and locking either the ammo or the guns up.
I am extra cautious so if I were to go to MD to shoot I would break down the upper and lower of my AR and place them in their case. I would leave my Glock field stripped in its case. Guns would go in the trunk and I would keep the ammo locked in a metal ammo can in the passenger compartment. Federal Law affords us some protections regarding transporting legally owned firearms across state lines. Just make sure you do your research on individual state laws (for your destination state and all of the states you will be passing through) to make sure you are covered.
