I'm only going with the 16" to avoid paying the ATF the extra $200 for the SBR also.

Although I could consider a 14.5" and have it pinned, can I get any flash hider/compensator pinned?, and what's the cost?

I already have a YHM Phantom Compensator, would that work if it can be pinned to a 14.5" barrel??

I've also looked at Rainer barrels, but they're out of stock right now, and Noveske is way out of my budget for building a budget carbine at this point.

It's just a project to have a basic carbine, a nice to have rifle, just in case I ever need one (SHTF).

I already have over $2000 in my 18" SPR, which would serve as a long distance rifle should I ever need it.

So the carbine is for fun basic shooting, and emergancy CQB, although my 1st line of defense would be my Sig P226 or shotgun.. not a rifle LOL
You can have anything or your barrel, or nothing, as long as it's permanently attached and comes up 16 inches or greater when the ATF guy sticks a dowel rod down your barrel (like you're ever going to see an ATF agent out in the field). Some of the compensators on the market, like the BattleComp. can be had in a version pre-drilled for pinning and welding, most you have to drill and pin yourself. I don't know what that costs...you could price it with your local gunsmith or maybe better would be looking at the pricing at ADCO.

The biggest argument against compensators on indoor guns is that the noise and blast can be very distracting. Generally speaking, that's less of an issue with the Battlecomps from BCE or the Knight's compensator (that one is a real budget-buster). By reputation, the YHM, PWS, and Surefire brakes are way at the other end of the spectrum. I've shot in the shoot house with a guy who had an SBR and Surefire brake...it was really impressive (and unpleasant). You'd be better off with an A2 birdcage, and you can indeed have that pinned to a 14.5 inch barrel, but any pinned muzzle device isn't going to come off again without destroying the device and the end of the barrel.
