please understand that I'm scheduled for an Intro class on Oct 16, and I haven't shot anything yet; but Beretta, Glock, and Sig are at the top of my list.
Unfortunately, I was looking around last night and discovered that Remington has some pretty good rebates going on right now ($150 gift card) on rifles with scopes. A Remington 700 CDL is pretty high on my list. Might start with the rifle and then apply the gift card against the pistol. Or not.

Whatever you decide to do, keep me posted, you're pretty close to me in the DC area, we could hit up the range if you want. I could help you out, show you a couple things.

I just did Day 1 of this three-day Combative Carbine 2 course with Jeff Gonzales of Trident Concepts. Very, very interesting. It is a LOT of shooting, very fast-paced. I learned a LOT and could definitely feel improvement by the end of the 10 hour day.
15 shooters. We started with setting the guns up with a 50 yard battle zero, then moved to a variety of shots and shot strings between 5 yards and 50 yards, including a variety of malfunction drills and transitions to pistol. Everything outside of the 4 inch T-zone of the head or the 8 inch kill zone of the chest is a miss. On the graded evolutions a shot in the white is a DQ. Then he got out the timer. Very competitive, very intense. It was a blast! Those of you guys with carbines...you have to seriously consider taking a similar high-level training course. I can't begin to describe how immensely valuable it is relative to understanding weapon maintenance, safe handling and developing a skill set that utilizes the AR15/M4 for what it was meant to do. I've been shooting this platform for many, many years. Monthly SWAT exercises, SWAT shooting drills and twice-a-year SO qualifications for more than 15 years, but what I learned today and expect to learn over the next two days will take me way beyond that. This particular course is a graded course, and I'm skeptical that I'm even going to pass (those 50 yard two-to-the-chest-and-one-to-the-head shots are kicking my ***) but the learning experience is fantastic. That's awesome, Mac. Glad you are having a good time. It sounds really intense!
After I get more comfortable with the weapon and can shoot it well enough I am going to try to find some basic courses and then hopefully progress to more advanced stuff. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I went to the Nation's Gunshow today. Looked around to find some good ammo deals and didn't see anything that I couldn't beat online. They had good deals on surplus ammo cans, though. $10 for perfect condition .50 cal cans... I should have picked some up but really didn't feel like dealing with them, so I bought a little knife instead:
Nifty little thing.

Aah...knives.
I never used to be a big knife aficionado but have acquiring a few lately. I have a bunch of Spydercos I've acquired over the years, but my interest has mostly been in automatics. I have a couple of "novelty" knives. I say "novelty" because their utility as actual tools is limited IMHO. The Super Squirt is one I bought and assembled recently as a kit from Knifekits.com and converted to an automatic. It's a Darryl Ralph design, 2-inch blade, I made it with carbon fiber grips. It's a hoot...a very cool little knife. Very high quality kit (AUS8 steel, which is...."OK", but it's an easy knife to sharpen). The conversion to switchblade was pretty simple as the bolster was already recessed for the spring. I only had to drill the blade pivot for the spring end. I have a Benchmade Infidel. It's an out-the-front automatic. Excellent knife for it's purpose, but I haven't figured out quite what it's purpose is. I have a couple of other Benchmades. The AFO is a beast and a great tool. First tanto I've ever owned. Not sure how I feel about tantos yet, I do know it's a PITA to sharpen. The other one is an old Benchmade Reflex automatic that I've had for many years. A little smaller, but still useful as a tool. My new favorite though is this Zero Tolerance 350ST. It's not an automatic exactly, it's a spring assist. The thumb button is worthless IMHO, but there's a tang on the blade hilt that lets that sucker out in a blink. It's SV30 steel and the grip is G10. It holds an edge like crazy. Fantastic knife IMHO and a bargain at $120. Last edited by MacCool; 10-09-2011 at 10:29 AM. |

I'll be honest... I am terrified of blades. I was joking with my gf that I don't like safeties on my guns but I need them on my knives!

Just took an intro to handguns class
okay, I'm starting to understand the "fascination" you all have with guns.
Took an intro class this evening; the first time I've shot a "real" handgun in my life (i.e. not a bb gun). Had a blast!!! At the end of class we had 2-22s, a 38 special, 5-9mm's (which included a glock 17), a sig 226-40, and a springield armory 1911. Those 40 and 45's were fun!! So, what do I buy first?

I know exactly what your benchmade is for as i have a double bladed knife. Its for sneaking up behind someone and sticking it right in the back of their neck or atleast thats what i figure.
