Yeh, I agree, but how could the gas block move if it's pinned? Also, no gunsmith that I know would use a set-screw gas block without dimpling the barrel so that at least the rear set screw is set into the dimple, with both the barrel pin and the set screw in the dimple keeping it from rotating. Usually the Rocksett is just a tiny dab...only enough to keep the set screws from backing out.

The barrels that I use, BCM and Centurion, all come from the factory dimpled for the rear set screw on a gas block. I would never rely on that, even with Rocksett, and I always have the gas block pinned (if I'm not using an FSB) in addition to the Rocksetted set screws.

I hope he didn't mis-drill the dimple (assuming he dimpled it) or pin the gas block off-axis. IOW, install the gas block with the gas hole and barrel port misaligned.

I had the compensator/muzzle-break pinned, not the gas block, so I didn't have to pay the ATF any money for having a SBR ;)

Anyway I'm sure I'll get the gas problem fixed next week :)

Damn, Trooper, sorry to hear that bro. Im sure it'll all turn out for the best.

Ah.

IMHO, the gas block should always be pinned. In addition, the barrel should always be dimpled for at least one of the two set screws on a typical gas block. If these things aren't done, the gas block can rotate or slide forward when the set screws come loose (and they will), in which case the gun won't cycle. My fear about a local gunsmith doing the gas block pinning is actually pinning it partially rotated - more likely if he doesn't have the proper jigs for that particular barrel. This is even more of a problem if the barrel isn't factory-dimpled, which will index the gas block exactly vertically so the gas port in the barrel aligns perfectly with the hole in the gas block.

I tend to send my barrels for this kind of gunsmithing to either ADCO, AR15 Barrels, or Rainier. You might have great gunsmiths in your area (I don't, but given your experience, I'm not sure you do either). My local gunsmith is a friend and a great guy, but this kind of stuff isn't in his skill or tool set. But the companies above all do excellent work, and the barrel and gas system is such a critical part of the functionality of the rifle that that's where I have the work done.

I don't have money for that sh1t! If I did, I have a long list of things to get for my car before I'd buy a gun :p

I can always rent one or borrow someone else's to go shooting. Which reminds me, whatever happened to that shooting meet we were planning? Paintball meet wouldn't be a bad idea either.
