I've debated getting a 1911 for some time now. Your recent purchase isn't helping my itch lol.

I'm just not a fan of their limited capacity. I was thinking of picking one up in .40 so I could throw in a 9mm conversion kit and shoot for cheap (well, cheap when the market stabilizes haha)

MightyBobo 06-14-2013 09:44 PM

In 5 days, I hit the 3-month mark on waiting for my pistol.

This is ridiculous.

Also, my shop hadn't gotten any background checks back for 4 working days when I called on Tuesday (I haven't called since).

That is a long wait! What did you order?

Nice! I'm surprised that it is taking that long to get a Springfield in once ordered. I guess that is a sign of the times. Ammo and now weapons. It'll be worth the wait once you get it.

Oh no, you misunderstand. It's sitting at the FFL for almost 3 months...paid for and ready to go...

You are correct! I did misunderstand...

Are you in MD? If so, how long is the wait period there normally? I know VA is instant, unless you get delayed, and even then it is usually approved by the next day. I have heard of the rare instance where someone is delayed for a week.

Good luck with that.

What's more irritating is technically, the FFL has the right to release the firearm to you after 7 days, regardless of MSP's completion of your paperwork. The FFL opts not to because they don't want to lose their license if MSP takes up issue (as in, MSP will find a reason not to renew the FFL's license, even though it is a completely legal transaction described in clear language).

What's even more irritating than that, is that you can go to almost any corner in Baltimore right about this time at night and pick up a Springfield .45 - no paperwork required. I'd leave the Z at home for that trip...

I'm in MD, yes. No idea how long it USED to take, but now, it is 3 months. More, likely.

You might want to check again with your FFL. Many are now releasing after 8 days based upon when you purchased the firearm. Maryland Shall Issue (MSI) has filed suit against the MSP to force this issue and to some degree it has shown some results. This has been a major issue with FFLs and purchasers since originally the FFLs were not releasing. Several have now released but many others are still holding them.

Now I'm also reading that the NICS center is now refusing to provide NICS numbers to any MD FFLs for handguns (long guns they still provide NICS numbers to FFLs) and they are only releasing them to the MSP. This has essentially resulted in many FFLs who were releasing on the 8th day to stop out of fear of legal action.

I can't wait to move out of the so-called "Free State".

What I have read from several FFLs is that they did not want to be the target of any legal action should they release a firearm to a purchaser after the 7 day period to find out that some whackjob takes out a family or worse and then they are taken to court for liability because they were disapproved when MSP finally ran the NICS check. Even though it would fail, the costs associated with defending themselves would likely be tremendous if not catastrophic for some of the smaller FFLs.

Makes sense to me. HUGE liability. I will not do a private sale to just anyone either. If I do not have direct knowlege that they have recently been allowed to purchase a firearm legally, I will not sell one to them. The only exception that I will make is if they have a USG issued security clearance, and even then it would be rare.

I have only sold a few in my days, because of the liability. I have been known to trade some in to the FFL that I was using to buy my next firearm.

Crux 06-15-2013 07:29 AM

This is also a very valid hypothetical. It's also very sad that there are such ways around upholding your constitutional rights.

When did you put in your request? And I take it by "release", you mean that they chose to ignore MSP not getting back to them?

Crux 06-17-2013 09:04 AM

Im having a firearm built, and its going to come real close to being finished around October. So I called on target last week to see if the runor was true that they're releasing firearms early/after 7 days and they told me they've decided not to do any more transfers.

m4a1mustang 06-17-2013 09:06 AM

VA folks... thinking about selling my G17 Gen 4. I don't ever use it, and honestly it's too big for my hand. The 19 is perfect.

Yes, They are following the Maryland Law which is that they can release the firearm on the 8th day...

Not our fault that they can't do their job in a timely fashion. Their IT is so bass aquards that they have to check 17 different databases... What a bunch of tools...

They are cops, not computer techs lol.

But that is still sad.

ZCarMan 06-17-2013 11:11 AM

I got my Designated Collector Application approval letter on Saturday! WooHoo! Now if I just had some more money to buy more stuff!

On a separate note, MSP says they've hired 65 more people to help with processing the background checks (both NICS and MD State) in time for the 1 October date that SB281 kicks in. Sad thing is that I suspect that when 1 October rolls around, regulated firearms purchases will drop dramatically, much to the satisfaction of Owe Malley and the rest of the Progressive numbskulls in Annapolis.

ZCarMan 06-20-2013 11:25 AM

FYI, there is a group known as "No More Names" which is an action group of Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) that is sponsoring a "bus tour" whereby they send a group of people to towns around the country to read the names of people killed by guns. They have indicated they'll be in Blackburg, VA tomorrow and down in Raleigh as well as Atlanta so far. They don't release all the dates ahead of time because they don't want protesters to ruin it for them but that has not worked.

Oh, I'll be getting mine any day now. So unless it's this weekend...lol

My place said they are usually around 92-94 days for their returns lately, so I'm sure I'll be getting the call either tomorrow or early next week.

I do hope you get yours by next week. There are folks on the Maryland Shooters forum who are now over 100 days and still waiting.

The whole hiring of additional people for MSP to process apps is BS. They've been behind forever and only after they had a lawsuit filed against them for infringement do they take action too little too late. They won't even be close to dealing with all the apps because the MSP won't have them trained until the end of July. That 8 weeks, or in reality 40 working days, minus any holidays or furlough days they have. Then when 1 October rolls around, the number of apps from new 1st time regulated gun buyers will drop like a lead weight with the new BS laws taking effect. Way to waste the tax payers money some more Owe Malley.

That blows. I take it you can't bring your own? MSAR here in MD was allowing folks to bring their own for a while. Not sure if they still do.
