Just took an intro to handguns class

okay, I'm starting to understand the "fascination" you all have with guns.
Took an intro class this evening; the first time I've shot a "real" handgun in my life (i.e. not a bb gun). Had a blast!!!
At the end of class we had 2-22s, a 38 special, 5-9mm's (which included a glock 17), a sig 226-40, and a springield armory 1911.
Those 40 and 45's were fun!!
So, what do I buy first?

MacCool 10-17-2011 05:43 AM

Depends entirely on what you're going to use it for.

I never used to be a big knife aficionado but have acquiring a few lately. I have a bunch of Spydercos I've acquired over the years, but my interest has mostly been in automatics.

I have a couple of "novelty" knives. I say "novelty" because their utility as actual tools is limited IMHO. The Super Squirt is one I bought and assembled recently as a kit from Knifekits.com and converted to an automatic. It's a Darryl Ralph design, 2-inch blade, I made it with carbon fiber grips. It's a hoot...a very cool little knife. Very high quality kit (AUS8 steel, which is...."OK", but it's an easy knife to sharpen). The conversion to switchblade was pretty simple as the bolster was already recessed for the spring. I only had to drill the blade pivot for the spring end.

http://SSEquine.net/supersquirts.jpg

I have a Benchmade Infidel. It's an out-the-front automatic. Excellent knife for it's purpose, but I haven't figured out quite what it's purpose is.

http://SSEquine.net/infidels.jpg

I have a couple of other Benchmades. The AFO is a beast and a great tool. First tanto I've ever owned. Not sure how I feel about tantos yet, I do know it's a PITA to sharpen. The other one is an old Benchmade Reflex automatic that I've had for many years. A little smaller, but still useful as a tool.

http://SSEquine.net/knivess.jpg

My new favorite though is this Zero Tolerance 350ST. It's not an automatic exactly, it's a spring assist. The thumb button is worthless IMHO, but there's a tang on the blade hilt that lets that sucker out in a blink. It's SV30 steel and the grip is G10. It holds an edge like crazy. Fantastic knife IMHO and a bargain at $120.

http://SSEquine.net/zerotolerances.jpg

I know exactly what your benchmade is for as i have a double bladed knife. Its for sneaking up behind someone and sticking it right in the back of their neck or atleast thats what i figure.

Yeh, no doubt. It's a foreign concept to me though - I tend to view knives as tools rather than weapons. It would take a massive failure in tactics and situational awareness for me to ever need a knife for personal defense.

The smart money is on the guy who is able to keep himself out of situations where a weapon is needed.

Just surrender whenever presented with danger. Works every time. Just ask the Brady campaigners.

This is true as well, but there are a lot of crazies in this world, a reasonable person must always be on guard and defensive.

Where is everyone getting their ammo right now? I need to pick up a few thousand rounds of 5.56 and I don't want to shoot Russian steel cased ammo.

ammoforsale.com :tiphat:

I just ordered some today, 5.56mm, 9mm FMJ & JHP ;)

You should find a nice deal if you're buying 1000+ rounds

MacCool 10-18-2011 08:30 PM

For ammo, check out Palmetto State Armory. Generally quite a bit cheaper than A4S, and shipping is about half ($12/1000 vs $22/1000rds)

PSA seems to have the best deals online that I have found. They've got the best pricing I've found and like Mac said shipping is a flat $12 per 1,000 rounds.

I picked up a thousand rounds of ball ammo for about what I saw it at the gun show in VA a few weekends ago. Thanks for pointing out the site. Does anyone shoot steel plate with their AR's and if so where do you get your frangible ammo?

Also, has anyone seen any of the South African battle packs of 5.56 for sale on the internet lately for a decent price?

I shoot steel all the time, but I don't use frangible ammo...doesn't play nice with the compensators I use on my rifles and it's a lot cheaper to buy AR500 targets and shoot ball ammo than it is to keep buying frangible ammo and shoot at cheaper steel.

The steel I use as a target is 1/2 inch thick AR500 armor plate. I shoot it from 50 yards or more with .223 and 10 yards or more with 9mm/.40 cal. Hang the plate with a little bit of downward angle and always wear eyepro.

You can generally use 1/4 inch mild steel as a target for handguns, but a .223 will go right through mild steel like it was butter.

Yea, they give the LE/Military discount. I got a G23 from him last year with night sights for 457.

I bought my Glock 26 from Engage Armament in Kensington, which is close to my house, and I thought I was getting a good deal, until I went down to Lawman, and saw it much much cheaper, I was kinda pissed, but you live and learn.

MacCool 10-30-2011 07:55 AM

I've bought pistols under Glock's "Blue Label" program. Discounts up to $100 plus a couple of extra magazines. Active military and LEO only. That discount is in addition to whatever the dealer is willing to apply, but many dealers will forgo their usual in-house discount if the Blue Label discount direct from Glock is applied. Kinda slimey, but they really make out on those deals. You pretty much have to sell firearms for no more than 10% over cost to be competitive these days and this deal can get them around that.

This explains why there was such a price difference between the 2 shops that I had been to.. Thanks Mac, again very good information.
