Heh. My collection is quality over quantity.

Except for the Deagle, that is purely a toy...

Let me know when your collection pass 40. I will have to get back out there and buying if that happens...

Very nice rifle. First class.

If you don't have a rear sight for it, I'd be inclined to recommend a Magpul MBUS if you're on a budget or a Troy fold-down if you're not. If you've played Modern Warfare Black Ops, you've seen the Troy rear sight. (Note however, that in Black Ops, that Troy sight is installed backwards on all the rifles.) Shoot it with the irons to get the feel of the gun, then start considering more robust optics.

You might want to consider a sling. There's not a quick-detach on the MOE stock, but you can strap into the rear slot. Other option is to replace the end-plate with a Noveske quick-detach plate. They're pretty cheap at $24, but you'd need a stock wrench to pull the buffer tube and replace the endplate. On the front, I use a Mount-n'-slot attached to the rear of the MOE handguard on my MOE-based SBR. You could attach to the front sling swivel, but I'll bet you find mounting the sling there annoying as it will get in the way of your support hand.

Thanks, Mac.

I have a traditional carry handle on the way, so I will use that for a while. Later I will look at the Aimpoint/Eotech and Trijicon's of the world to see what kind of optic I want, along with the MBUS rear backup sight.

Be aware that removing/reinstalling the carry handle with any sight on it will change your point-of-impact. Even the best of mounts will shift as much as +/- 2 MOA when you do that. You should be able to mount a red-dot sight on top of the carry handle, but that makes for a pretty huge height-over-bore which can make for complicated hold-overs at distances of 25 yards or less.

m4a1mustang 09-23-2011 08:22 AM

I'll keep that in mind.

I just wanted to keep things basic to start with, then I'll ditch the handle and go for the RDS and BUS.

Yeah ditch the "carry handle" LOL.

Just get a flip/fold iron sight for the rear.

You have a nice flat-top receiver, I would keep it that way, and just mount a red-dot.

m4a1mustang 09-23-2011 10:15 AM

Well the CH is already on the way.

I am pretty sure I will upgrade to an RDS and the MBUS rear backup sight at some point in the future. I want to get comfortable with the weapon first.

I've never been attracted to carry handles either, but you can get an Airsoft carry handle for $30. It's a relatively cheap way to put an iron sight on a flattop - about 1/2 the price of an MBUS.

By the way, anyone got a quick summary on Shotgun ownership in MD?

Paperwork/registration required?, wait time (usual 7 days)?

I'm thinking about a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500, but need a little more research.

I have the Remington 870, (Express Synthetic).. I had to special order mine from one of the dealers around here, Im pretty sure you dont have to wait 7 days, you will do your normal background check paperwork with the NICS section of the FBI at the time of purchase.

I've mentioned before my skepticism about recent and current SIG firearms. While earlier versions (German) are superb, reliable weapons, the new SigArms paradigm is quite suspect in the view of many, many department armorers.

I saw a thread on another sight that illustrates another direction relative to SIG corporate concept and IMHO is even more puzzling to me than their often-reported current corner cutting in design and relative lack of quality control.

Admittedly, I view firearms as tools, not as art, but the Sig MasterShop has gone beyond my ability to comprehend their overall corporate policy. I think it's illustrative of Sig's new corporate direction and represents a reason I wouldn't buy a current Sig firearm.

I would rather have one of these than a painting of Elvis on black velvet, but still.....

LOL, my money says you're a Glock fanboy :icon18:

There's a reason many forces & spec-ops, and ex-military (myself), choose Sig.

Besides, if a problem occurs with a firearm, I can always beat them with a heavy steel Sig, not a polymer Glock ;)

I own a Glock 17 but rarely use it. Never been a fan. I have an M&P 9L I use for gaming..I like that weapon for that purpose. My go-to pistol, the one that I carry on call-outs and the one I carry if-and-when-I-carry concealed is the P229 (German) I've had since 1996. It has been superbly reliable for over 10,000 rounds. I wouldn't trade it, but I wouldn't buy a current one. The failure rates of the current versions are simply too high. And while DHS awarded the most recent pistol trials to both Sig and HK, I think you'll find that most of those DHS agencies used the co-winner concept to be able to abandon Sig because of the failure rate and high cost of maintenance. Slide cracking, trigger bar failures, grips, and breech block pin are recurrent problems since SigArms took over. I have personally seen each of these failures in Sigs at various agency shoots and pistol courses over the last few years. IMHO, and in my observation, Sig's current reliability problems have passed into the realm of "conventional wisdom" among the LE professionals I hang around with, and virtually every nationally-known firearms instructor I've trained with since 2007.

As to Special Forces, the SEALs have been issued Sig P226 since 1986, but they're not buying new versions, continuing to use the ones in inventory. Individual units can use whatever they want, but the current acquisition trend is toward the HK USP in .45. Rangers are still using the M9, Delta, I don't know but Larry Vickers at a course last year said they're abandoning the Sig in droves. He indicated that they're moving toward Glocks, but I take that with a grain of salt because he IS a Glock fanboy (and has nothing good to say about Sigs other than their illustrious history).

Anyway, you can't use agency purchases as an indicator of quality, only of contracting price. A perfect example of that was the military pistol trials in 1985. Sig P226 actually won that competition by a handy margin but the Beretta was selected on the basis of slightly lower cost and the fact that they agreed to build them in the US. Most US forces including SEALs went with the M9, but in high round-count shooting such as the SEALs do, the Beretta suffered occasional slide-stop failures where the slide would fly off and hit the shooter in the jaw. It lead to the old saying "You're not a real SEAL until you've tasted Italian steel". That was the point at which they switched over to the P226 as their issue weapon. The more recent move toward HK has been precisely because of skepticism about current Sigs.

(edited to add info from a buddy I called this morning. He is/was a Navy SEAL, moved up to SOCOM and was there until he retired two years ago.)

Yeah I'm favoring the Remington 870 over the Mossberg 500 right now.

Probably looking at the 870 Express Tactical.

What do you think of yours.. pros? cons?

m4a1mustang 09-24-2011 04:01 PM

I have an 870 Express that I added a Knoxx Specops stock to. It's gobs of fun. I love it.

I took the AR to the range today. The sightmark RDS is a POS but otherwise it shoots great. Can't wait to get it sighted in with the irons and spend more quality time with it... all I was really doing today was shooting in the general vicinity of a target and making sure everything functioned properly.

Also tried some Sellier & Bellot 9mm FMJ (124gr) today and found that it didn't reliably fire in the Ruger LC9 but seemed to shoot fine out of my G26. Seems to have a pretty hard primer

I've used Sellier & Bellot 9mm (115gr) in my Sigs with no issues, but I generally stick with Federal ammo, for both the Sigs and the AR.

As for the 870, I think that may be my next purchase LOL

Not sure I need a scope on it for anything less than 10yrds, and 00-shot for home defense.

Darren, to be honest with you man, I havent even fired it yet, the only reason I bought it was because in my job, we have them, and as I was going through training, I was very unfamiliar with the whole functionality of it, but I was an excellent shot with it being that I had former military experience with the m-16, using those fundamentals.

So I bought it to really acquaint myself with it, and now Im good to go. I love it though, its badass, I have not done any mods to it though. I'd say buy one, they're cheap too.
