Any tips for selling car to Carmax?

I'm going to swing into CarMax later this week and see what they'll give me for the Z. Anyone have any experience selling to them? Is it straight forward or can you haggle with them? I'd like to get top dollar from them or at least close to it and I've heard they are pretty fair to deal with.

You drive in, they take your car out back for about 30 minutes and inspect it top to bottom, then hand you a written offer. Actually a very painless process, and they give you whats fair. Private party is obviously better if you can wait.

You're not going to get the best price at CarMax but they are usually reasonable. If you don't want to deal with the hassles of a private sale, CarMax is a viable alternative. Check out KBB.com, et al (don't use just one), so you will have a good idea of what the current range is.

Can you haggle? Everything is negotiable. ;)

to buy my zed in '12 for my '13 it was suggested i take it to carmax for an appraisal since i was interested in my honda '11 cr-z paid off value...i paid cash for the car a year earlier w/upgrades taking the car up to 26k...

the dealer seemed very impressed that my cr-z only had 8k miles on butt, only offered 16k as a cash trade-in...

totally a rip-off unless a person is in dire need off a payday...

When I was looking for my Z last Spring, I brought in my current ride at the time (2004 Saturn Ion Redline) for a quote. A little bit of background: I bought the Saturn new, so I was the original owner, roughly 90k miles, only 1 minor accident (hit a deer, no major damage, only replaced the windshield, hood, and 1 fender), etc.

I think the KBB value was around $6,500, and they offered $4,000. They were nice enough to throw in an extra $500 if I traded it in and bought a car from them!

I ended up selling it on Craigslist for $5,500. Based on the interest I received, I feel I could have easily sold it for $6,500, but I was kind of in a time crunch (I had already arranged a transfer on the Z via Carmax, and I was worried that I wouldn't have the Saturn sold by then).

I'm not hurting to get rid of the Z but just looking what they'd give me without having to deal with lookie-loos. Obviously private party would be best and we'll see what they offer me before I go down that road. Thanks for the replies so far.

You might as well take it in and see what they say. As far as negotiation, I don't think they really budge.

Well that was a bust. Maybe if I had a coke habit and needed cash quick.

Don't let me drive it if it has low mile. Like under 15 or 20.... And if they did I told em I'm riding along. Then I told em to take that stupid cone off my roof so it didn't scratch unless they're gonna fix it. Take that price then add 1k at another dealership there's is about avg plus 1k for sales and bonuses else where
