I've never had a gym membership but, being around people that are, it appears to me that going to the gym is more of a social activity unless you are a body builder or very serious about exercise. As kenchan hints at, the average I-wanna-get-rid-of-this-pot-belly person can get all the exercise they need without fancy equipment. Of course, if going to the gym works for you, then go for it.
