I have gained 60 pounds since quitting drinking 14 years ago, but the day of my last drink I weighed in at 165 pounds -- this was the price I paid for living on an alcohol-only diet.

After my first wife...I quit women all together, not because there aren't good ones but because I wasn't willing to carry the emotional load that goes with relationships while trying to find the right one. It wasn't long after that when I became friends with my now wife. We were friends over a year and a half before the topic of dating came up and when it did I was pretty clear about what I could offer and what I expected out of a relationship. We dated yet another year + and then got engaged and eventually married.

Honestly I wouldn't have done this good on my own if I was looking. I think a strong friendship is a precursor to a successful relationship and the best relationships happen when you aren't looking. Sounds cliché but it worked for me.

My MIL and FIL were high school sweethearts that have over 50 years of marriage, not sure there's many like that any longer.

Unfortunately there's no shortcut to getting over these things but in time you will, no doubt. Go shoot some stuff...destruction of stuff, even if it's just a zombie target, always makes me feel better.

I didn't date much when I was younger because I didn't enjoy the dating process. I just figured I would know, so I stopped forcing it. Sure enough, I became friends with my future wife randomly through a mutual friend. We moved in together about 6 months later, and there were only a few real "dates" in there. After a couple of years, we figured we work pretty well. One day she randomly brought up the topic of marriage. I feigned disinterest and proposed to her a few weeks later.

Both sets of my grandparents and one set of her grandparents have been married 50+ years, and my parents are at 35 years. Her other set of grandparents and her parents are divorced. After what we've gone through the first few years of marriage, I don't have any doubt that we are strong enough to make it 50 years. We just have to keep at it

What I hated most is the expectation for the man to pay for the whole date. Now don't get me wrong, I generally did (still believe in some chivalry if I like the girl), but what I appreciated was the effort. She doesn't need to ask, but reaching for her purse or something when the bill came was always appreciated.

Reaching for the purse would make me think she didn't want the guy thinking it was a date. Haha
