It’s very difficult to forecast tornadoes accurately but certain weather conditions are present during almost any tornado. High winds, hail and rain are only a few of the pointers that a tornado could form. But, even though these conditions may exist that doesn’t mean a tornado will appear. Some tornadoes form when there’s no rain in site. At times an area can experience very high winds but no tornado activity. Tornadoes are unpredictable but knowing what to look for in the weather will at least allow you to be aware of the possibility of a tornado.

When there’s a cold front moving in but ahead of the front is warm, moist air with heavy winds, the conditions are right for a tornado. Large, low hanging, dark clouds can also signal the right conditions for a funnel cloud.

Since the air becomes electrically charged during a tornado one warning sign is to have your hair stand up when you go outside. If you walk outdoors and suddenly your hair is full of electricity or the hair stands up on your neck or arms it could mean that the atmosphere is becoming electrically charged and perfect for a tornado occurrence.

Sudden hail is another pointer that a tornado could be forming or that one is already nearby. Hail and rain together are common during a tornado as well.

Heavy winds that contain debris are not a good sign. When debris is flying around, especially particularly heavy items, accompanied by rain, hail or constant heavy winds, a tornado is likely forming or present. Occasional wind gusts are not as likely to help form a tornado. Constant wind is more apt to lend to the formation of a funnel cloud.

Some animals are very intuitive. If your dog or cat is suddenly acting strangely you might pay closer attention to him. If he seems to want to hide under the bed, go to the basement, or refuses to go out during bad weather conditions it could be a sign that the animal knows something you don’t. Not all animals get upset during bad weather so don’t rely solely on an animal to keep you informed.

During severe weather use a battery operated radio to listen for tornado watches and warnings. A tornado watch means the weather conditions seem perfect for the formation of a tornado. A tornado warning means a funnel cloud has been spotted in your area.

Some things you’ve heard about tornadoes are true whereas other things are simply myths. For instance, for years people have said you’ll be safer if you go to the southwest corner of your home. Not true. One corner of the house is no safer than another corner when a tornado strikes. The best place to be is in a basement but if there is none head towards a small central room in the house, like a bathroom. Even if there is a basement it doesn’t mean you’re completely safe. Falling lumber and flying glass can still endanger your family. Huddle together with faces towards a corner or a wall. Use pillows and blankets to surround yourself and your family. Practice tornado drills with your family and have a special place where everyone will go if a tornado ever appears. Carry along pillows and blankets to cover yourself with during the tornado. Make sure the “safety” room has no windows and is large enough to hold the family members and pets.

Are you in a house or an apartment?
For either one, is it on the ground floor, or multi story?

If you have any windows, cover them up if you can, but crack them slightly to allow the air pressure to equalize.

If you have a basement, go there with a blanket/flashlight/radio.
If not, go to the central room in your house, I reccomend a bathroom.
If you want to go all out, get a mattress and lay it over you in the bathtub. If your not that hardcore, just get a blanket.

***As always, have a video camera around in case something awesome happens, or to cover the carnage***

How long ago was the warning issued? Can you see the radar? What's the storm's direction of travel in relation to your house?

The windows are coming southwest than they cross back to where they came. Yes I have basement and I will go there soon if need be. Everything outside right now is calm as can be. My cat is right next to me just chilling. The basement is pretty big I have generator and all that good stuff. Hmm maybe I need to run out and get one of those new ipod nanos with the video cam considering the only one I have is my kodak camera that can do movies. LOL kidding. But I will try to find it real quick.

If you have porn and a basement, that's a good thing to do whether there is a tornado or not.

7. A tornado watch means the weather conditions seem perfect for the formation of a tornado. A tornado warning means a funnel cloud has been spotted in your area.
1. Also, if you see it is raining heavily, and hailing, and 'all of a sudden' stops... thats a good sign that a Tornado could be close. There's a difference between the storm moving on and ALL OF A SUDDEN, you'll know it when it happens.

2. Also, if you have the chance to see the sky, take a peek if you can SEE rotation in the clouds. If it's night time and extremely dark, don't risk getting injured to check for this. But it's pretty defininative if you can see rotation in the cloud, things are churning and thats good for Tornado's.

3. Lightning is extremely prevelant during a T-Storm capable of making Tornado's, if you find yourself outside and unable to find shelter and your hair stands up, get as LOW as you can to the ground. Your hair is standing up sending a Positive energy into the sky, whereas a Negative stream is leaking down from the cloud, if these two join up. You have lightning, don't be a conductor. If your hair stands up, you get DOWN. And if the winds pick up and you realize your in a bad situation, any and all cover is better than none. If a ditch is the best you can do, it's what you do...

4. Again, see #1.

5. Also, look for drastic changes in wind direction, possible sign of wind shear which helps in the formation of Tornado's. If since the time the storm started, the wind has been continually from the east, and it quickly shifts to blowing west. Eyes open, heads down.

6. Animals (Dogs, Cats, etc.) ears can hear lower frequency noises you can't, and yes moving air makes alot of noise at different freqencies, so watch them, if they start getting really antsy, yeah, you should be cautious.

7. If you have the ability to, have a phone nearby, preferably cell so you don't talk on a landline that can get struck by lightning, but if you do end up having a Tornado or Funnel Cloud (Tornado that hasn't touched down), call it in to either 911 or the news agency for your area if you have the number. Don't let someone else get caught by surprise, especially if it's only watch conditions and you see one. Don't assume 'someone else will'... Call it in!

Sorry frost, not trying to undermind, you hit it perfectly. Just trying to help you out =)

We have these all the time in the South during the spring. Just get to the innermost room in the building you're in and get as low to the ground as you can. They always tell us to find a bathroom on the first floor and get in the tub with a mattress on top of us if at all possible. Since you have a basement, you should go down there and take a weather radio, flashlight, and other essentials with you if you have time to grab them.
