Feds consider installing location tracking devices

Saw this article on the Drudge Report. Evidently the NHTSB is considering mandating a system called V2V in new cars. Supposedly, the system will enable vehicles to "communicate" with each other, thereby increasing safety by reducing accidents.
At least that's how it's being "sold" or marketed to us.

But even some in the govt are critical, saying that it is basically a location tracking device, and also could be used to implement a tax on every mile driven.

What do folks think? Is a potential accident avoidance system worth the risk of having your location tracked, and making it easy to tax every mile driven?

The one tax that they are talking about and gaining traction is a mileage tax. It is because they feel that the hybrid and electric cars are getting a free ride on road use because they pay little to nothing in fuel taxes. The catch to this is. We already have a fuel tax. This will go alone with it. Meaning now us gas and diesel users will pay the mileage tax too, if this comes about. Any way they can get their hands into your wallet. They will find a way.

It probably wouldn't be a miles driven tax versus gas tax, it'll be both. They won't get rid of gas tax and replace it, they'll keep the gas tax and add the miles driven tax. I think already in some of the northeastern states, they have a state tax for miles driven. Just as there are state and federal gas taxes, there will probably be state and federal miles driven taxes.

One of the things I read was. There would be a sensor in the car that recorded mileage. When you pull up to a gas pump gas, and filled your tank. The sensor in the car would send it's data to the fuel pump. The when the pump would show how much fuel you bought, plus the mileage tax you have to pay too.

Not to mention the erosion of privacy. It would be interesting if whomever did this could be completely transparent on the uses and data collected, and be verified to not be getting more than they need.

But that's a level of transparency we will never get.

There's a reason Google is one of those wanting to get autonomous cars. Because if they can track every place you go, they can feed even more customized advertisements directly to you, maybe even in the car itself. It will be aware of your habits and where you currently are, and point out the nearest Starbucks to your left.

If there's a crime in the area where you car just was, are you suddenly a suspect? Or an amber alert? Will an ex-spouse be able to convince the government to watch you? Or a business that thinks you're committing disability fraud? Think of the children!

What about vehicles for important people such as CEO level persons? There is big value in knowing where they are hanging out or where they are visiting, as it may give away things like merger plans.
