I use an enterprise level hardware firewall that does just fine. I keep AV protection on a few machines just in case because they contain critical data.

Apparently, the idle-scan feature sucked up the last bit of available resources if another resource intensive process was active such as Time Machine 
. I decided to disable idle-scanning because backups are much more important to me.
