I would make the assumption that you are asked this when you are pulled over is to incriminate yourself. Most cops will write a small note on the back of the ticket about the stop just in case they end up going to court. When I got a recent speeding ticket the CHP asked if i knew how fast I was going? Again being a veteran here, I said "No i was going with traffic." He then proceeded to tell me I was going 85. he then asked me on 2 separate occasions if I was running late? And both times i said "No", just heading to the office. This would be an example of trying to get me to incriminate myself.

In the past when you would go to your initial court date they would ask how you plead and you could either plead; not guilty, guilty with an explanation, no contest or guilty. If you pled one of the last 2 you were sentenced (or fined) right then and sent on your way. if you Pled to the others they would send you back with an assistant DA and they would negotiate with you unless the cop noted the ticket then they would use that against you and get you to accept their deal. Maybe its budget cuts or what have you but they no longer do that. You plead not guilty they set you a court date and you are on your way.

Is there more leeway when it comes to speed in the carpool lane? When it's not too busy I constantly find myself and others going 80-90mph in the carpool lane compared to 60-70mph main traffic. And yet I don't think I've ever seen anyone pulled over from the carpool lane.

I got pulled over for speeding/excessive lane change and he said "you should have just drove in the carpool lane it would have just been a fine."

Man this thread is so fckin boss! Im sayin if I had to recount all the times cops pulled me, I mean just the other day. They literally try to find something on your car to bust u on when there is literally nothing! I just sit back and laugh, a trooper I took off on the other day later told me "I had no chance of catching u". Slow vics

man i got pulled over tonight on a side road that leads to the campus no side walks or entrances but the speed limit is 20mph. im usually very cautious about speeding but the officer was clocking people at the bottom of the hill and i wasnt paying attention and just popped it in neutral and coasted. i haven't had a ticket in 5 years and he wrote me for 45 in a 20 and i had no idea i was going that fast.. i respect all officers and i was super nice and confessed that i felt like i was speeding and i apologized that i wasn't paying attention being late for my meeting with my professor. he said he cut me a break but didnt reduce the speed however he spelled my license plate wrong along with the city name and some other little things. did he do this on purpose so i could get the ticket thrown out or am i screwed either way. it makes me sick to my stomach that i slipped up like this and have to fork out all this money for a lawyer and court fines for doing $

Why would you need a lawyer? More than likely, the spelling mistakes made by the officer won't be enough of a "technicality" to get you off (it's not like this is a murder case). Plead guilty and take your lumps. But I'm no lawyer; I don't even portray one on TV.

Real cop or campus cop? If it's a real cop, get a lawyer just so your insurance doesn't go up. If it's a campus cop, don't worry about it.

I understand where your coming from. But we've all been there. No need for a lawyer. It is what it is. Just pay the ticket.

If I can't take defensive driving, I always get a lawyer. It's not about the fine, I'd happily pay it. I just don't want my insurance to go up. Every time I've gotten a lawyer, I've gotten out without my insurance getting jacked up on me.

If you can get out of it with some court fees and defensive driving, do that.

At Puerto Rico, there's a lot of stereotyping when it comes to cops stopping cars. For example If there are 1 370z, 1 Mustang and one Honda Civic 96'. They will surely stop the Honda. 7 out of 10 hondas and Integras are running super loud exhaust.

My question: If I get stopped for my FI Exhaust.. what would be my best bet to not get a ticket?

Assume Guilt? Say that it's not that loud?? LOL

FI exhaust is the least of your worries. Definitely doesn't sound like a Honda -

I wouldn't be worried - Just watch for cops before you decide to take it to redline and be a respectful diver

Question for OP..Is a child crossing sign (yellow diamond of parent stick figure holding child stick figures hand) in a school zone considered a "Stop Sign" during non school hours? The reason I ask is because a while back I was driving in the community my mom lives in on a weekend. A cop pulled me over for what was written as a "rolling stop through a stop sign". So I asked the cop which stop sign it was and he told me the one on the corner of Menta Street which is where the child crossing sign is. I didnt argue but was kind of confused as to him saying it was a stop sign. I thought of it as a yield sign which is why i came to a slow creep of about 5mph and made the right turn instead of a complete stop. it was a $140 ticket with no points and no course needed. I ended up taking pics of the sign later that day because I really wanted to show up to court to fight it but didnt want to face extra court fees if for some reason it was truly considered a stop sign.
