Next Generation Gaming Systems

I am just curious to see how people on this forum feel about the new systems over the horizon. I would like to read everyone’s thoughts and concerns, pros and cons, etc.

My relationship with Microsoft and the Xbox go back to the prerelease of the original system. I was actually honored enough to be a beta tester for the Xbox, and again with Xbox Live before it was introduced. So I lean very much towards this franchise for my gaming experience.

That said I am very unsettled and torn between the Xbox One and PS4. They both look to be very solid systems to bring us entertainment for many years to come. What concerns me with the Xbox One is the direction Microsoft has chosen to go with, and if you have done any reading you know what I mean.

Let’s face it anymore these two companies give just about the same quality in performance and graphics. I do not see the point in arguing those facts it is pretty much mute. As stated above though Microsoft has chosen a rough road with it gaming side of the system. At this point the only thing that makes me want an Xbox One is this: Illumiroom Wiki

I’m sure I will end up with both systems within a couple years but I really want to make sure I choose the right system first. I will be buying two of which ever one I decide on (one for the wife as well). It has always been the Xbox in the past, but this time I can’t decide on my own.

I've always Been a playstation fan...for some reason, the PS3 didn't let me down so I expect the same from PS4

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 12:56 AM

The only thing I dislike about my PS3 is the online gaming and updates. It was so much slower/laggy than the 360. That is why the 360 has been my goto system for online gaming.

Microsoft has announced an increase from 15,000 servers to 300,000 as well.

Wow I didn't know that, I once owned a xbox360 mainly because halo 3...I did enjoy the 360 and the playstation 3 but hard times made me decide on which to sell and I ended up with the PS3 because free online gaming lol...

Who knows I might end up with both again :)

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 01:09 AM

I believe to play games online with the PS4 you will have to pay. How ever you can play games offline for free unlike the Xbox One.

I forgot to mention when I said the PS3's network was slow that the PS4 will have a max bandwidth of 176 GB/s 16x the PS3.

Ps4 games will remain free online from what I understood. There really are not major changes to the way things work. The only thing is that developers can choose whether to charge for used games...which may become important may not.

Oh I thought I read on the Wiki Page you would have to pay for the PS4 Multiplayer I will double check and correct the info.

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 02:04 AM

Online multiplayer access requires a subscription to PlayStation Plus.[50] Copy and pasted from Wiki. Is PSPlus free? If it is then you are correct if not my post is still correct. Im on my phone right now cant look up the info on PSPlus.

Nice! I will be to late probably to pre order and have to wait in line somewhere. Hopefully this thread and more news over the next month or two can help me figure it out quicker.

Thanks for the confirmation on the cost of online multiplayer for the PS4. It would have to be like 2.50 a month or less for it to be considerably cheaper than Xbox Live though.

theDreamer 06-12-2013 07:06 AM

MS is definitely going with the we don't care take what we offer or go somewhere else.
Xbox chief: we have a product for people who can't get online, it's called Xbox 360

Currently I am going for neither, they both offer nothing new in the realm of the console world. Yes they have better graphics and want you to use hands free gaming more but this generation console does all of that very well.

4r3s 06-12-2013 07:09 AM

wheres the option for "I'm buying or sticking with PC?

Huck 06-12-2013 07:25 AM

I've been playing video games since Nintendo times, and when the first play station came out I got it. I've been using the PS platform ever since. I've owned an Xbox and and Xbox 360, and both of them died on me in less than 6 or 7 months. I hate paying for stuff when you've already paid for it, and honestly I doubt I'll pay for PSplus. That makes me mad. But Microsoft has been and will continue to be a bunch of Nazis that don't care about the wants or needs of their customers. I'll be sticking with Sony.

bdavis89 06-12-2013 07:44 AM

I voted to wait for consumer reviews, just because I feel there is still a lot to be explained and fully understood regarding used games, xbox tv control, etc.

I might actually pick up a used PS3 for the bluray player and free online gaming. I currently have a 360, and let my Live Gold subscription cancel this past March. I'm 24, married, focused on my career and getting my CPA. Unfortunately I simply don't have the time anymore. When I do play, I'm still playing Madden '11, Forza III, and Halo3. Sure, $60/year isn't a ton, but when I'm playing online for maybe 3 or 4 weeks in the year? Not worth it anymore.

Does anyone know if PS3 online gaming will still be free?

Niche79 06-12-2013 07:50 AM

After Xbox pulled the junk they did, im going back to PS this next console. I pre ordered 7 systems total 3/4 of each. I plan to sell em all right before launch and get a console in the spring because none of the launch games are worth while for me. The only game I liked on Xbox was the Titansfall but that will be on PC and Sony after a year. I have a gaming rig now and was a PC gamer for along long time so Ill just play it there. I am just not gonna put up with a money crazy company. If i like your product I will buy it and spend money on games. I also love to rent games from redbox and will borrow games etc like we were kids. Therefore I went PS for my final choice.

Shadezz 06-12-2013 07:50 AM

I've been with xbox live now for over 10 years and plan on staying with xbox. I'm never playing single player so Online is where its at for me and xbox has been the leader in online gaming forever now...although the PS4 is tempting....I'll continue my long stay with Microsoft.

PS/ My xbox gamer tag is SHADEZZ if any wants to game sometime!

fonzo179 06-12-2013 07:59 AM

Just put my $150.00 down payment for the PS4, Controller and Last Of Us game yesterday afternoon.
I told my boss I had to get allergy medicine from my apartment :icon17:

That is not what this thread is about??? :ugh2: Just so this doesnt turn into a PC vs Console war though, we all know PC trumps any console that has or ever will be built.

I love PC's and built a new rig every 1-2 years for 10 years now. It isnt a hobby anymore though to expensive since I do not use them for what I build them for (gaming). I choose not to game on a PC for personal reasons. Mostly because of hackers/cheaters/xploiters. They are way out of control over the PC platform. Also because staying on the cutting edge of PC technology, and getting the most out of PC games, would require me to build/rebuild rigs more often than I do.

Also I love the fact that Console Developers leave alot on the table and find ways to improve years down the road. Heck look at Xbox 360/PS3 release titles and games over the years. They got better and better! To this day developers are finding more power and different techniques to get the most out of the equipment. And guess what? I never once had to spend another dime on that.

PC developers want to use the cutting edge technology (dont blame them) and that causes me to upgrade my rig, with my taste, and I imagine alot of others taste on this forum, sets you back quite a few of those dimes.

Back on Topic!

Sorry for your luck with your Xbox(s) they did have their hiccups. I was lucky and all three of my 360s never skipped a beat. Nor did my last original until I sold it a few years ago (Halo Edition Man I miss that thing!).

I agree 100% with their attitude/approach to the customers.

I feel you on the time to play! I do not know about the PS3 being free or not for online multiplayer. I just use mine for Console specific titles offline, and Blu-Ray movies.

Since I will probably (if not already) miss the chance to preorder I may have to buy one or two from you so I do not have to wait in a line! Dont rip me off to bad though :p It will never be as good as the profit I mad on the PS2 years ago my dad and I got a total of 9 and sold them all for 2k + that was awesome. To be fair the title of the thread say "Next Gen Gaming Systems" not "Next Gen Gaming Consoles" so I felt that PCs where viable. And to continue being fair going PC and playing games typically means going with microsoft as well but at least there is starting to be some support on the other OS. And I'm done being off topic.

If I buy a console I'll have to wait for more information. Microsoft doesn't exactly have that great of a track record with their hardware and I still have a sour taste in my mouth from when Sony took away the boot to another OS option. I would definitely buy the PS4 if I had no history or preconceived notions about either company and based my choice off just the consoles themselves.

xxAGAVExx 06-12-2013 11:05 AM

I currently have both (360/PS3), but I lean towards Xbox because of their games, namely Halo. If PS4 comes out with with some awesome new games, then I would probably get it too. With both systems being as good as they are, to me it just comes down to the quality of their games.

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 11:09 AM

Fair enough  in my defense though I do not consider a PC a gaming system because they do so much more. Lets face it, you can build one just for gaming but they are multi taskers and we all use them for more than gaming. Then again the consoles are now trying to do to much of thie "multi tasking" and frankly it pisses me off.

I feel like im being spammed with ads every time I turn on one of my systems and see all the garbage pop up, facebook, twitter, netflix, hulu, etc. Everything I own is preloaded with that junk! I want an online gaming system and thats it!!!!! Man where did that come from....lol

ElVee 06-12-2013 11:10 AM

I voted for xbox one for now.

My background is of Nintendo in the early days, then sharing time with PC gaming, skipping the Wii, loving xbox360, and passing on the ps3. I passed on the ps3 because it gathered dust in all my friends' places whereas the xbox360 got used. I do consider myself an off-and-on-again core gamer, if you use those terms.

I'll give the PS4 consideration, but at the end of the day, I likely only have time and interest enough to give to one console, not two. I'll probably simply flow to where the most core gamers flow to.

The PS3 doesn't do it because it was difficult/expensive to develop for, so it never really had quite the library for its first 3/4 of life that the xbox360 had and lacked good online support. The PS4 needs to change that and start out strong in North America. Sony lost money on the PS3. It's been a huge uphill battle for them, and not one they win in North America. They trounce the xbox360 though in other markets, particularly Asia. It'll be interesting. Clearly having the best specs is not the key; the Wii outsold everyone (despite being a borderline failure to gamers) and had the worst specs. The PS3 has always been ahead on a purely device technical level (minus the Move/Kinect comparo), but if you can't court the core gamers and have a quality library with key system features that match or beat the competition, you will still struggle. The Wii got by because it courted a different market, but it's not a sustainable market unlike the core gamer market.

The good thing in all of this is that 3 platforms (plus PC and Mobile/Handhelds) went into this last generation and 3 platforms survived and are emerging for the next round. Competition is good.

SmokeEater27 06-12-2013 11:35 AM

Im a bit undecided when it comes to the new systems. Ive owned both a 360 and PS3 and theres the give and takes with both. With the new PS4 and Xbox one I feel its the same way again. I personally feel Microsoft has always had better servers and for the most part better exclusive game titles. Where as gaming online with the PS3 has been both great and horrible and they too have some good exclusive titles but thats my own experiences and opinion of course. I guess the give and take is that ones free and ones paid for as far online gaming services go. So go figure where more server up keep is going to go towards. With the new xbox one Im not too big on their second hand games tactics from what Ive seen and read. I think alot of people share games or sell games to buddies and for them to pretty much crush that market really sucks. I did read that Microsoft is suppose to being doing a free game a month for "Gold" memberships not sure how true it is. Either way Im looking forward to trying both systems and seeing how they rank against eachother but i personally think the PS4 will stay as the focal system with consumers and the xbox one might find itself posted alot on Craigslist. just my :twocents:

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 11:39 AM

Again for people that are not reading all the posts the PS4 will require a PSPlus membership to play games online. It is no longer free.

I'll just upgrade my GPU for $500 instead. Don't have to worry about backwards compatibility, lack of launch games, subscriptions to play on the internets, a graphics ceiling, and I can do 3 monitors. I'd rather wait for the dust to settle. I bought a Wii back in 2009, it's not used very often. I used to be a big console gamer, but after replacing six PS2's, no thanks. I've never had a pc part fail unless I did something stupid. My brother replaced two Xbox 360's, I don't have much faith in the durability of consoles anymore. Why is it all the Nintendo needs is someone's hot @ss breath blowing on it? Super Nintendo still works, N64 still works, Gamecube still works. Dreamcast still works. If I would choose only one? PS4 would take my money. $500 and DRM is rough. Not only that but their cloud computing to increase performance does sound like a great idea, it forces the console to always be online for games that deem it necessary. Better have a 100+mb connection because now you'll hear family members bjtch because your F'n Xbox is stealing all the bandwidth to play your game.

ok good to know because I hadnt read that yet, hopefully this means a better online experience and free map upgrades for future games like xbox owners.

Mr&Mrs 06-12-2013 01:50 PM

When your gaming do you want to share any bandwidth? I dont! :rofl2:

Joking aside the new routers out there can make even a 10mb connection go a long way. With the help of lag compensation of console gaming you do not need crazy speeds to play at the same level of someone with a screaming fast connection.

It sucks to have that fast connection though and get owned by lag compensation, but it allows everyone no matter the budget to enjoy the games.

I've already got 2 Xbox Ones on preorder for day one release. I am not loyal to either company as ive had both x boxes and ps1 and ps2. Ive never owned a ps3 because there were no games i felt i had to have for it, and everyone i knew were buying 360 versions of the online games due to multiplayer reliability. I also preordered these xboxes before the ps4 release conference at E3, just so i was guaranteed a xbox system. If i decide to not want it before release i will just sell them or return them unopened to the store for my refund. There is no down side to preordering. Now after the PS4 conference, it looks like they can be rocking a better exclusive lineup, but who knows, there is still 5 months till release time and what both have up their last minute sleeves we can only guess. As for the online deal with xbox, this does not bother me as bandwidth is not an issue in my house and could care less if it has to connect everyday. But I do understand the people in more undeveloped areas bitching about it. In the end though, its looking like I will be purchasing both systems prior to christmas time lol Neither will fail and fall on its face, no matter what people are thinking due to the restrictions. These are now pretty much the last 2 systems left (Wi U basicly being a flop), and the odds of one dominating the other so much that it becomes a 1 system community for gamers is slim to none in my opinion.

PS4's Price And Policies Humiliate Microsoft's Xbox One At E3 - Forbes

PS4:rock:FTW

that forbes article is fine, ive read it when it first came out yesterday. But its still all moot points. $500 price is not a lot, especially when you compare it to what ps3 cost when it first came out... I guarantee sony had 2 price points set for ps4 based on what xbox said it was launching at. Xbox one is the same price as what 360 and kinect cost for people that bought them both when they came out. The only argument is now forcing everyone to buy a connect, but i feel real strongly that kinect will be a major bonus in the forgoing years and has monstrous potential with the new specs. But if $100 price difference is really your make or break budget decision, then people have larger financial issues at hand and probably shouldnt be buying any system. Plus if you end up buying the sony camera device you are at the same price point if not more (i dont know the sony camera price, but assume it will be atleast $100)

As for the used game portion, it is still a non issue until the game company itself makes it an issue. Who knows, not a single company may enforce the used game policy for Xbox One.

Like i said in my other post, im not a platform loyalist, and im not arguing that One is better than PS4. I do like to play devils advocate though and look at how big of an issue really is the objectifications people are making about how bad a system is compared to another

lololol theres honestly no way anyone can say xbox after that press conference yesterday. what a joke. requiring high speed internet?? way to alienate troops overseas and rural area owner microsoft.... what a joke

the ps4 is statisticly better in every way. costs $100 less. and microsoft has to use sony blue ray players in its box...

As I catch up on news, I see now why I see this topic popping up: E3! Microsoft isn't making this easy for themselves and is making it easy for Sony to get a standing ovation. $100 more for the console is the biggest reason PS3 adoption was slow.

I couldn't care less about used game sales. It's a market that simply will not last over time as media becomes more digital, just like music. Sure it's not going to completely go away and places like GameStop will be pissed, but it's hard to be absolutely upset about it.

"Always on" requirements are lame and unnecessary if you ask me, but it wouldn't affect my purchase because I'm always on anyway.

I don't care for the Kinect. I'd rather not have it and I'd rather not pay to have it. I don't want it invading my privacy and otherwise getting me up off the couch. That's really the reason for the price difference. As a core gamer, I just want a controller in my hand. As a PC gamer, I just want to sit and use a kb/mouse as a controller. Not stand up and gesture, or gesture at all.

I took in a lot of e3 coverage and I am far more intrigued by the One's lineup of games. TC's The Division is the only ps4 title Sony showed that blew me away. According to not always accurate wiki Division is not an exclusive, One/ps4.

Price is a big deal because of other effects it produces. When little Timmy wants a game console system and frugal parents compare, they compare pretty much by price. That puts Timmy on the cheaper system. Same with a whole host of people who barely afford a system plus the games/periphs. This gives you a base of people who will be on the cheaper system, regardless of any other quality. Game developers look at the cost to develop a game on a platform and the potential market numbers.

Just talking off the top of my head, I wonder how many game consoles have led their generation while flat out costing significantly more?

Someone should start a new thread: How much $ are you gonna scalp your PS4 or XB1 for?
