DRM
DRM when implemented in a very heavy-handed or ridiculous way doesn't work. It pisses people off, it gets in the way, it causes issues, or introduces new requirements for the user. I still refuse to use any "DRM" that has to have a special installer to run (I'm looking at the home video/digital copy industry on that one) whenever I can. There are ways to end up with DRM, for instance things like Steam. It wasn't until Skyrim being Steam-required that finally made me cave in on Steam and sign up. But being on that platform more or less puts me in the same position as if I had DRM in all my games. Slow boil... Moving toward digital gaming that is stored on some server on the Internet basically ends up being DRM without the baggage. I just don't think the DRM argument ends up being very strong because of this. I think "always online" arguments have more weight. I'm just anti-DRM. I've not sold any games since I got $2 for my old NES games back in 1992 and walked away as a child feeling like I got stolen from. I don't trade them around or lend out games either; pretty much all of my friends can afford their own. And I've not rented a game since, well, probably high school. For me (as a computer security/privacy interested party) it's the principle. It's why I'm one of those strange people who doesn't use iTunes and still has a collection of mp3s on local disks... Always-on eavesdropping/automation This bugs me as well, but it's hard to really fight heavily against automation. The always on mic/camera, though, it a quality-of-life concern to me. If I wanted even the thought of a Truman Show-esque lifestyle, I'd just do it. The downside is if I *ever* want to walk into a room and say "Xbox netflix," then it *needs* to be listening all the time. At the very least, I trust Microsoft than other services that leverage these capabilities for free and use *me* as the product for them to make money. Here's a quote I pulled from some news article that I think fits my feelings on gaming: "I remember when video games were about getting Mario to save the princess and, when you were done, the console would leave you the hell alone." It's coming...soon we'll have 4 entire walls called Xbox Four and we'll be in Fahrenheit 451's world. :) |
That cab was so fun, even though I got spanked and never did understand how some of those kids learned 20-button unstoppable combos... I didn't even fathom back then how you even found out about them let alone memorized them. Just give me upupdowndown...
Still, I can still hear and smile at the memory of those sound effects and graphics. :yum: |

Yep. My skills peaked with the first SF2 and MK2. It was downhill from there.

The whole thing that bothers me with Xbox1 is things "have" to be on because they say so. In truth I bet the system can function 100% just fine w/o kinect watching (literally) you're every move. What function does this "sign on" have? Qhat is it reporting to the prying eyes of MS? There is no doubt going to be a lot of data collection they can get and sell. Kinect can map out the room it sits in, take all that info, your schedule, it's off times, your TV habits, all of that, beam it up to good ole Microsoft, they dump it into an SWL database and mine the F@ck out the information they just received... for free. Your phones are doing it, Facebook, google, twitter, pinterest, bing, yahoo, gmail, every single free service on the internet is paid by your privacy. Now I don't mind giving some of that up for free services. The stuff I don't like sharing, I don't add to my profiles, I restrict what can be sent to them, whatever. Xbox1 is not transparent with their ulterior motives, and with it being from MS, they do want to know what you are doing. Now if they come out and say, you can make changes to what your Xbox sends to MS, that will be a huge step in the right direction. I want control of my information, it isn't MS's because they have a box that collected it, it originated from me and I want to dictate what I give up. The whole be like "Steam" argument has some merit, but is still flawed. They fail to mention that you CAN play Steam in offline mode. I love Steam, but anyone who deployed to a location w/o internet with a gaming PC knows, you put Steam offline, back it up, and go on your merry way. I can see a mandated 30 day reconnect period if it's really a security or DRM thing. My Zune pass requires a 30 day DRM check so I can listen to all my music. Understandable, I pay a monthly fee to get a crap ton of music. Xbox live is a monthly service fee unless you pay for the year. At least it makes some kind of sense. As it sits, they have not quantified the necessity to connect once a day. They have not quantified the necessity to have Kinect watch your every move. That is scary. I'm all for companies making money. PS4 is at least more transparent in what your shiny new toy is doing in the background. I spent 9 years playing PC only. Yeah I had a Wii, but I haven't played that in a while. We really just get smashed and then record ourselves looking retarded in Just Dance. I LOVED Gran Turismo, but I couldn't justify buying a PS3 for just that. Xbox had a few notables, but I just didn't have that urge to get one. I miss fighting games, first party games, and the selection of racing games. I tried playing that Forza Horizon game, idk what it was, did not like the physics engine. I've been playing Shift II with all the nannies (except ABS) turned off, it feels so much more visceral, I get more communication, more feedback on the adjustments I need to make. I'll stick to that until something better comes around. |

both consoles are not home runs. sony sh*t on microsoft at e3, but i think it's all a kneejerk reaction. i'm not going to buy anything first run, but eventually i will probably pony up for an xbox one.
with that said, no game except for mirrors edge 2 really interested me, so i'm in no rush. i'd much rather keep playing fifa, dead or alive, or whatever i'm in the mood for. for xbox 360 - my original model finally died a few months ago. i think the disk drive went bad, because i can still play things off of the hard drive, and i use hbo go through the xbox 360. i'm debating opening it up and replacing the disk drive, but heard it was a PITA. |
