Technicians in avionics and other fields such as aerospace materials are in high demand due to the retirement of baby-boomers. Wages vary from anywhere from $65k-$120k a year.

TACAN systems are used in a military application. I work on civilian aircraft, mainly transatlantic commercial airliners such as Boeing 777. Civil aviation uses the VOR/DME system, which is very similar. In fact, TACAN is a type of VOR/DME system used for military aviation.
Interesting - I was told they had Tacans at the comercial fields as well - must be the variant they were thinking of.... never could figure out why you'd want a system that tells everyone where you are located for use with the Military

I'm an air traffic controller and you are correct. Most airports have a co-located Vortac/Tacan. We get a fair number of military practice approaches that use the Tacan. Some of them don't even have VHF radios!

Learn the important ones now! PHP, Ruby, etc... Those in combination with PERL and Javascript, you'll be in business! (Forget the Micro$oft languages... That's going to be a dead company soon and those languages will be left behind.) Cool to see another language savvy person on the board!
