Canada recently ended circulation of the penny.

Under the new system, cash transactions will now round up or down to the nearest nickel once taxes are added in. That means, potentially, there's profit to be made if you shop carefully enough. If the majority of your purchase prices end in .01 or .02, or .06 or .07, they will typically be rounded down to the nearest .00 or .05. If your purchases tend to end in .03 or .04, or .08 or .09, however, store owners will typically round up.

The brutal thing is watching these idiot kids try to figure out how much change to give back. They already can't count money.

Oh, the Canadian government is also saying that the above is merely a guideline. If a business wants to round up every transaction they can.



The fancy .25 cent piece is just for coin collectors.

I consider myself a bit of numismatist, though I haven't actually purchased any coins in a number of years. I would never collect coins that didn't make it into circulation unless they were uncirculated versions of actual circulated money. I inherited a few coins that are tributes to former presidents, but I would never go out of my way to purchase that kind of coin. In fact, my grandfathers (from whom I inherited many of my older US coins) and now myself, take pride that the majority of the collection was pulled from circulation ourselves
