Signed up for the Houston Marathon again and need to begin my training. Since it almost will kill me to run in this heat I am taking different steps right now. Heating better and riding my bike indoors for the time, hopefully in a few weeks it might be a bit cooler and I can get out and run more.

I enjoy my working out, it is my stress relief, plus it is nice to keep in shape.

When does the Marathon start? I need to starting conditioning soon but not for a Marathon.

Houston Marathon is January 17th, 2010.

I eat a packed lunch every day. Same reasons as theDreamer. It's healthier and I can actually watch what I eat. Gotta stay in fighting shape ya know?!

Oh I like to workout, but NO WAY IN HELL I'm running in this heat we have had lately. Also, I am not a fan of treadmills...

I like to go golf or a long drive as my stress relief / free therapy.

Wow that far off? I guess I have to be ready a couple of months before you. I know we are getting a bit off topic, but do you guys have any tips on gaining endurance besides the treadmill?

It is about completing the distance at an equal pace. You do not want to run the first two miles at X rate and then the next two at a slower pace. When I started last year, after three years of no running, I did six miles my first day. But I did it through a combination of running/walking, where I would run at a steady pace (probably 10 minute mile) for X time (5 minutes the first day) then walk briskly for one minute and repeat for 6 miles. After three weeks of that I could run 6 miles straight at about 10 minute mile pace and slowly worked it down through different things. Doing some speed work, natural gain of endurance and being pushed by others. I also bought a road bike and ride that.

maybe cycling would be a better fit for me. i'm not into the whole running thing. i'm trying to keep my knees in the best possible condition.

I'm a Marine and have to run and PT like every day. When I first started, well to be honest, it was terrible, lol. Now I can run about 3-4 miles flat out at about a 7 min/mile pace. Best suggestion I have is to do combination training to work your fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers. Do just what the Dreamer is talking about. Make sure to combine sprints, suicides, obsticle, etc. workouts with you normal jogging/walking routines. Also make sure to practice breathing techniques while running.

Also, ensure that your breathing techniques allow you to breath correctly with your pace and actual steps. Most of the time you start getting cramps is due to the stretching of a certain nerve (can't remember the name of it) from you lungs through the pancreas. (SP) As you breath in the lungs expand and pulls that nerve upward. If you are stepping down on that side while you are breathing in, it pulls the nerve and causes stress which releases an enzyme into the body which causes that pain in your side. Just a little extra FYI

Oh yeah...i get that pain. Always wondered why that was. An old buddy of mine called just a little while ago and gave me some motivation to go to the gym tomorrow night so I guess I'll see if I can get back into the swing of things.
