So my Mom has been diagnosed with COPD...

Well....

My little brother called me the other day to tell me my mom was in the hospital. They thought she had a cold, seeing is that my family has a history of asthma. After my mom getting worse of the next day or so, and extensive tests... the doctors have come to the conclusion that she has COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

My aunt (My moms older sister) was diagnosed with COPD a few months ago, and was hospitalized for a few weeks. Her health got really bad. To the point where machines were pumping her blood and breathing for her. This is really starting to worry me, because my grandfather died of COPD when I was a little boy.

The Wikipedia Definition....

Quote:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed. This leads to a limitation of the flow of air to and from the lungs causing shortness of breath. In contrast to asthma, the limitation of airflow is poorly reversible and usually gets progressively worse over time.

COPD is caused by noxious particles or gases, most commonly from smoking, which trigger an abnormal inflammatory response in the lung.[1][2] The inflammatory response in the larger airways is known as chronic bronchitis, which is diagnosed clinically when people regularly cough up sputum. In the alveoli, the inflammatory response causes destruction of the tissue of the lung, a process known as emphysema. The natural course of COPD is characterized by occasional sudden worsenings of symptoms called acute exacerbations, most of which are caused by infections or air pollution.

The diagnosis of COPD requires lung function tests. Important management strategies are smoking cessation, vaccinations, rehabilitation and drug therapy (often using inhalers). Some patients go on to requiring long-term oxygen therapy or lung transplantation.[1]

Worldwide, COPD ranked sixth as the cause of death in 1990. It is projected to be the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020 due to an increase in smoking rates and demographic changes in many countries.[1] COPD is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S., and the economic burden of COPD in the U.S. in 2007 was $42.6 billion in health care costs and lost productivity.[3][4]

COPD is also known as chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD), chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD), chronic airflow limitation (CAL) and chronic obstructive respiratory disease.
At this point my family is wondering if this is hereditary. My mom currently is in the hospital for more test, but it is not looking good. At least she has to quite smoking now. Which I have been wanting her to do since they day she started (Which also happened to be the day my uncle died of black lung... go figure).

^^ I'm hoping for the best for your mom.

when my Dad was hospitalized, he had bacteria in the blood.....the first thing the doctor said was "do not search the internet......because..................."....my Dad had a temperature of more then 104 F...which is dangerous and blood pressure was 250/120.

but now he's at home and i take care of him !

also, i dunno how it is in the States, but you need to have at least one family member there at all times because when I was with my dad, i watched the other elderly ppl get neglected by the nurses/staff..........so I had to keep things up to date....you have to make sure you're on there minds so that they dont forget you and end up on the back burners.

wow! I hope your mom feels better! YOu need to tell her to quit smoking. It's really not good for the health. What kind of test are they are going to do? I'm pretty sure she had tons of xrays taken already.

My prayers will go for her :(

They did some breathing test. You are rated on a scale of 0-800 on how well your lungs work. 600 is average.... my younger brother (who is 18) blew a 650 as a reference for the doctor. My mom blew a 200, which means her lungs are very weak.

Hey Slidefox, I'm really sorry to hear about your news :( My thoughts and prayers go out to your mom and family.
