If we can't shoot her, can we at least take away her driver's license? She did this for an hour while crying on the phone to 911 and couldn't figure out how to stop her own car? Brakes, parking brakes, shift to neutral, or hell turn the key off.

Probably trying to beat a ticket after passing a cop at 80 or something all the other causes of unattended acceleration were driver error or intentional after the actual cars were tested and no fault was found.

Even the guy claiming he found a fault was not credible.

What they need to put in all cars is the ability for the police or service to stop the car just incase they get an idiot that is unable to stop the car using the countless methods available.

I know new GM cars from 2007 on can be found via GPS and stopped by Onstar.
So incidents like this don't happen, also acts as a great low-jack as well.

All of these problems could be solved if automatics were outlawed, and people had to use 3 pedals to drive their cars...

From the C/D article linked above:
Quote:
But, as C/D demonstrated in a story published in June 1987, an Audi 5000 could be brought to a halt from 70 mph at wide-open throttle in a reasonably short distance (we demonstrated that a Toyota Camry could do the same in March 2010). Then, as now, no car could overpower its brakes.
So, while a smart person might resort to turning off the car or shifting to neutral if things were really screwy, the bottom line is the brake pedal works just fine. How can anyone not figure out to use the normal brake pedal to stop the car?

well... let me just comment that i had an Audi 5000s in the 80's and the accelerator did in fact stick on while i was going down an on ramp.. scared the pee out of me.

i was able to throw it in neutral before too long - and about burned the engine out at max redline.

(later in that same cars life the steering wheel came off while i was driving... survived that one too - and still later - the entire dash caught fire due to shorts in the wiring... finally sold it - probably should have sued.)

so anyhow - throttles can stick open, and it may not be the drivers fault.

Agreed, but its because of something else like a floor mat being installed on the wrong car stuff like that. But it has been proven its basically impossible for the gas pedal to just randomly accelerate for no reason at all.

And even in a "floor mat" case, all you have to do is stomp on the brake pedal till you stop.

The part about this story that makes me believe it was a hoax is that she had the state of mind to be on the phone and remain somewhat calm during the whole ordeal, like she was on the phone saying "I'm going over 120 miles an hour, I'm about to slam into two tractor trailers"

I would think a normal reaction of a person would be more like "OMFG What the F*** help me out", and then hang up and try to maneuver the car, not stay on the phone the whole time.....LOL

Thats what kind of put me off about the whole story, Idk just my opinion,

and @wstar-she said she tried the brakes but it didn't work

I guess it depends on your locale, though. In Houston I think the normal reaction to this would be "Toss me another beer and watch this"
