Buying an expensive factory produced 1911 doesn't guarantee reliability.
I am on the research mode now.. thanks for the help!

I have a Kimber TLE/RL II and haven't had any issues with it. Not saying it's a great 1911, but I also haven't experienced any of the bad things that I've read about on the internet. The only thing I hate about it is that Kimber only comes with a 1 year warranty, whereas most or every other manufacturer has a lifetime warranty. That can be a deal breaker for some people.

For that price range, I would go with a SA MC Operator or a TRP. If it is your first pistol I understand the allure of buying new, but don't hesitate to buy used or secondhand if the gun is in good condition and you come across a good deal. Guns aren't generally like cars where the first owner can beat it to sh!t then gave it a good washing before selling leaving the next owner with all the problems. It either works or it doesn't and as long as it has a good finish, then you're good to go. I wish I knew that when I started buying guns.

Thanks! Where do we usually see good used guns? Do we them online or at the gun shop as well? What does SA stand for? Is this a manufacturer? Thanks for the help.

SA=Springfield Armory. Look around if there's a dedicated gun forum in your region that allows members to post for sale ads and you can also check out Armslist. It's like craigslist for guns.

This is an area of obfuscation commonly used by gun control alarmists. It's not like buying something from Amazon. If the seller ships it to you then it has to go to an FFL, in which case you have to fill out a 4473, show a PTC and maybe a NICS check (depending on state law). Alternatively, he can sell it to you face-to-face, but if he's smart he'll want to see your DL and PTC/PTP before selling it.

Thanks for the clarification. Is it safe to say that all guns that we buy online or even gun shops are authentic? thanks!

Caveat emptor. Use the same precautions you would for any purchase.

And remember that the person/shop with the FFL on your end is just accepting the shipment and is not responsible for any problems you might encounter.

If we're talking about a new-in-box gun, probably. If we're talking a used gun, that's true of the frame only, with its rollmark and serial number. More importantly, you have to beware of accessories or added parts. It's not impossible to get some really crappy aftermarket parts as add-ons or as "enhancememts", and this could be especially problematic on 1911's, probably the most "customized" firearm on the market. And it's not just parts quality you have to worry about, but also the possibility that it's been "worked on" by someone with less-than-stellar gunsmithing skills. I'm certainly not a 1911 fan, but if I were to buy one, I would be very leery of buying it from someone I didn't know to be honest and reliable.
