Ever since I saw Top Shot the Volquartsen custom Rugers have intrigued me, but a stock one would be more than sufficient for some target shooting fun. I am sure you would agree |

That's a cool gun...there is something about Rugers that make them seem indestructable. I like the Volquartsen rifles but the pistols are a little too fancy for my tastes so putting one of their triggers (by your recommendation) on a shiny new Mark III might be the way to go.

Does anybody else use the iSnipe app on their iPhone? I would highly recommend it, especially if you a noob to distance shooting like me. I just got back from a day of shooting in the high-desert in CA to finally get to use and zero my REPR. I've never really used a .308 passed 100m before, but after I zeroed it I took a silhouette out to 500 yards and with the app I was pinging it from the very first shot. It felt good to not waste almost $1.75 each on any missed shots. Next time I'll try add a couple hundred more yards.
Also finally got to use my new Kimber 1911 for the first time. With all the hate I see on that brand I expected to be disappointed, but I experienced nothing negative with the ~70 rounds I put through it so far. Definitely easier to manage the recoil and follow-up shots compared to my Glock 30. |

So I am in the market for a cheap, reliable and compact rifle...which means I am looking for an AK. I have read a lot about 7.62 vs 5.45 and have decided that I am going for the latter.
Is this a dumb idea considering the lesser availability of the ammo? Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer for a civilian version AK-74? |

No I think he's talking AK47 vs AK74. One is 7.62x39 and the other is 5.45x39

That is correct...I am looking to buy an AK with a folding stock, but now I am trying to decide between a AK-47 (7.62mm) or AK-74 (5.45mm) clone. I have read that the 5.45 round has better ballistics and is much more accurate but is less available. I wanted to go to the gun show this weekend to see if there was any bulk 5.45 ammo around but didn't make it, so I wanted to see from the rest of you if you have found it hard to get your hands on such ammo.

Selection does seem very limited on the ammo sites I use.

I would rather buy/build an AR than get an AK, though.
