I am switching companies (my last day is Friday) and it is liberating. They came looking for me, which is just icing on the cake.

Well, my company has lost so many experts, I'm going to attempt some highway robbery. I'm going to try and "ethically extort" a 30k raise out of them, or I'll find a company across the street that will pay me that, because it's really what I'm worth.

Here is the deal -- and I am sure you know this. The only real way to make a quantum leap in salary is to leave -- in most cases.

I am aware of that. I know they won't bump me up. But nothing ventured, nothing gained, and they've got to grovel to keep me at this point anyway. If there was ever a time to try, now is it.

I'd at least be in the talking phase with another company before trying leverage on the one you are with.
