the part about getting blank fobs worries me. would that mean you can go to your dealer and request a blank fob saying you lost yours or something. and use it to rip off another z....................... Hackers steal BMWs in 3 minutes using security loophole - Technolog on msnbc.com |

Yeah pretty much. If you can send the correct codes to the car then you can put it in programming mode and program a blank FOB. FOB's are openly available from the dealer or online, there aren't any purchasing restrictions currently.
Currently only the Consult-III has the programming codes, but an inline serial data sniffer could be used to learn the codes and program a home made device to do the same. Only saving grace is that this requires a rather intelligent criminal, but if someone starts producing "programming devices" then your average car thief will have no problem.

1 $5.00 Bosh relay and a hidden pressure switch and the car will be there in the morning.
I used to wire these up all the time in the suburbs of Detroit back in the 80s. I would use the window switch, cigarette lighter, pressure switch to be active to complete the circuit to the starter.
