Default New home for the Z

My old garage was on it's last legs - roof leaked, foundation was shot, pad was shot and the final straw was last year a squirrel got in and destroyed it. So it's time for a new one. Last one was 20' x 22', this is 24' x 28'. When I parked my Z on the left hand side of the old one, I could only open the door to the first click to get out - it was that tight. The extra 4' should help with that situation. I'm going to have two rooms in it - the front will just be for cars and then the back room (5' x 24') will be accessible through a man door on the back corner. That room will be for yard stuff & other non-car stuff.

Here are a few pics of the old one and then where we are today with the new one. Trusses were supposed to be here yesterday & didn't show. I'll update as we go along.

Old garage. Not sure when it was built, but it was a mess.

Tearing down the old one. Contractor was really worried about it falling into the neighbor's since they're only a couple feet apart.

Here's the foundation before backfill. The interior took 70 tons of backfill.

And here's where we are today. The demo / foundation / floor took nearly 3 weeks. The framing & sheathing took 5 hours.

Until you have had a squirrel in a structure, you have no idea how destructive they can be (I sure didn't). When he first started getting in (ripped off shingles / sheathing), I covered it with metal. He just tore a bigger hole. Put chicken wire over it and he ripped down the wooden fascia to get in. Every hole I'd plug, he'd tear a new one. He had all of his nuts stored in the eaves, which caused them to fall. He eventually started tearing off the clapboards to get in after I cut the trees back so he couldn't get to the roof.
I tried live traps, poison, kill traps, moth balls, loud music, squirrel keep away and a host of other things. Then I started shooting them. After about a dozen kills, still didn't get the right one.

I finally soaked his store of nuts in bleach and he gave up getting in to retreive them.

Squirrels suck.

instead of hiring a bulldozer, i think i would have just used a holy hand gernade with the squirrel in there. two birds with one stone

Well...
We're getting there. Still waiting on the doors and then I have to finish the inside. But at least the Z has a place to go now. I've been leaving it at my garage at the office and driving my truck since whatever I took home had to sit out all night in the driveway. At least it's covered now.

In the shot below, you can see the 'back room'. It will be just for yard stuff. The front area is for cars only - nothing else. Hoping to get started covering the walls this weekend with OSB.

And here's a shot of the side.

Doors should be installed yet this week.

Now the Z is secure! Still have to paint them, but at least I can lock everything up now.

And if you ever have to put in new openers, take a look at Liftmaster 3800's. So cool. The control panel even tells you the temp in the garage. And they've got an automatic deadbolt on them so they're impossible to pry open.

Few updated photos...

I can actually open the doors on the Z now!

My GUV to keep it clean.

The back room where all the yard stuff will go-still finishing up painting back there.

Outside with the doors painted.
