Default Senate Bill 1813 (known as MAP-21)

Senate Bill 1813 (known as MAP-21)

In a "Big Brother" move , section 31406 of the bill makes it mandatory for "black box" event recorders to be installed in every new passenger vehicle starting with model year 2015.

Section 31504 requires the development of special alarm systems designed to remind drivers that there are other passengers in the vehicle.

Duh.

Somebody look this up and tell me I've mis-interpreted this sh$t. I must have be...surely.

Not necessarily, there are already black boxes on a lot of cars, but even today they are only used by the car manufacturer/dealerships to get info.
To use it in court or other things, they have to go to the car manufacture and get them to access the data, most will not for legal reasons.

GT-R, some Porsches, I believe Ford or maybe GM said they have been putting them in but do not give access to the data to anyone ever.
So far the challenges have been with insurance claims, an insurance company wants the data to challenge someone in court so they can not pay out, but the car manufactures do not want to get involved since they have the access key. Unless this new Government bill requires them to hand over the key or make a universal key then requiring black boxes will do nothing to hurt us initially.

Yeah that is the new "in" thing for insurance companies to help reduce your rates, but at the same time track you more. I would hate to see someone pull up my data....

1. I dont feel comfortable with someone tracking me
2. I don't want them seeing how I drive.

Ya, I remember when the GTR first came out the black box would record if you ever turned the launch control on, so they could void your warranty

Also, Progressives new 'Snapshot' program plugs into your OBD-II port. I can imagine all it's doing is storing your driving habits and such. I bet if you do a couple 100+mph runs on a freeway onramp, they'll see that and ^^^ your rates.
