Should I hold out for the Samsung Galaxy S3?

Just wanting some opinions. I know the S3 is said to be coming out this summer, but idk if I should wait. I still have a crappy basic phone with no data plan. I have never had a smart phone and think it's time to get one.

I have At&t and will probably stick with them. It looks like the best 4G phone they have currently is the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, which seems like a pretty solid phone.

I know the S3 will have quad-processors, but honestly I can't think of any reason why I would need that. It's not like I will be wanting to play Crysis 2 on my phone or anything. And as for as the OS, I know the S3 will come with the new ice cream sandwhich OS, but I assume that the S2 can be updated with the new OS anyway.

So should I sign a new contract today and get the S2 Skyrocket or is it worth it to wait a couple more months for the S3? Please help me decide!

I would wait a little for the S3 see what it brings to the table.

I have an s1 and will be keeping an eye on the s3 for sure

i'd wait for the S3 personally. i have the Galaxy Nexus and i love it. if you jump on the skyrocket now, you will probably regret it in a few months with the S3 drops. of course there will always be something better "down the pipe" but the S3 will be a biiigggg launch phone. very sought after by the android faithful. i'm sure it will raise the bar again

Switch to Verizon and get the Galaxy Nexus. It's a great phone. There is no need to wait until summer. There is always going to be something better coming out.

I see. But do you really think it will be a huge difference between the S3 and the Skyrocket for someone such as myself? My main concerns will be that the phone has fast internet browsing speeds. As far as apps, my app use will probably be limited to "practical" things such as a personal finance app, calorie tracking app, and things of that nature. I doubt I will need quad processors for that. Watching the reviews of the Skyrocket, it looks like it already has blazing fast internet speeds and ample processing power.

So I guess what I really want to know is what specifically is the S3 going to bring to the table that will make it worth the wait and/or extra cost to someone with simple needs such as myself?

no one will be able to answer that question until the final specs are revealed just before release. i will say android 4.0 is awesome. if the skyrocket will get (or has gotten) 4.0 you should be fine but if not, that's worth the wait to be current with the latest android OS. they say that all apps are "backwards" compatible but i remember on my droid 1 after it quit getting updates that apps started having more trouble running as the OS kept getting further and further left behind. 4.0 is really awesome and has lots of features both up front and behind the scenes that make it more efficient in just about every way.

I'm in the same boat as you, except I have a Droid Incredible. I can upgrade right now and get something like a Droid Razr Maxx or Galaxy Nexus, but I think I'm gonna wait for the S3 this summer.

HKYStormFront 03-21-2012 01:08 PM

both the RAZR Maxx and GalaNexus have great reviews, you won't go wrong with either. i will say i have the (samsung) extended battery in my nexus and i'm glad i do. the Maxx is probably the best phone out there right now for both battery life and functionality, at least in android OS'

Yeah I don't have an urgent need to upgrade right now since my current phone works fine. I would be kind of mad if I got one of those right now and the S3 came out like 3-4 months later, so I'm just gonna wait for it.

A quick Google search just confirmed that the Skyrocket will be getting updated to the new Android OS.

So I guess the only reasons I should wait are hardware related, unless there is something else I am missing.

HKYStormFront 03-21-2012 01:19 PM

that's what made me so mad about the bionic i had briefly. motorola had touted the bionic as the end-all-be-all phone of the next (this) year. then two weeks later announced the ultrabadass droid RAZR. that and my bionic's insistent problems cause me to jump ship over to samsung and i'm glad i did, it's been a fantastic phone for me

i would imagine the S3 will probably get a quad core processor. most likely the new tegra3 chip going into tablets now. that might be worth the wait. it's supposed to be massively more power efficient than the current dual cores.

Current rumors are suggesting a May 22nd launch date for the S3. Other rumors say that Samsung might be bumping that launch up one month to sometime in April. I would be very happy if either of these are true.
