A member mentioned that backing into a parking spot was ghetto and I'm here today to get the real low-down as it were. Tell me what you think and why.

I personally back into nearly every spot I pull into, unless I pull in through the spot that ends up behind me. Either way, the end result's the same. I find that it's safer for me to drive out of a spot than it is to back out into traffic where I'm half blind.

I have not noticed cars in the ghetto all facing one direction.

Parking is up to the driver. No it is not ghetto.

No, I dont think so. Actually, I would have never thought that until I read this post hahah. I back in when I can because the rear is higher up than the front lip of my car...

This is precisely why I back in a lot of the times. Those stupid parking curbs are going to be the bane of my existence. :rofl2:

Exactly!

There is one time when I would say that backing in is ghetto: on a street with diagonal parking. I see this every once in a while... Definitely ghetto.

ghet·to [get-oh]

noun, plural ghet·tos, ghet·toes.
1. a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.
2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.
3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.
4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.

adjective
5. pertaining to or characteristic of life in a ghetto or the people who live there: ghetto culture.
6. Often Disparaging and Offensive. noting something that is considered to be unrefined, low-class, cheap, or inferior: Her furniture is so ghetto!
i don't even see how you can apply "ghetto" as an adjective to backing into a space? it doesn't make any sense. :icon14:

1. Front of car is lower than back
2. rear visibility in the Z = what visibility; therefore safer to back into spot than back out into traffic.
3. Along with #2, at night it's hard to back out of a spot because I can't see much and have to use side mirrors.
4. how can a parking job even be called "ghetto"
5. only time I would say wtf for a parking job is when somebody tries to back into an angled parking spot :shakes head:

I just use my factory back up camera. I'd rather not try to accidentally scrape my front
end on those cement parking blocks.http://www.crescoconcrete.com/parkingstop.jpg
I've seen so many people eat these things badly.

TerribleONE 02-23-2012 12:16 PM

That's the main reason I back in.. Even without the camera I feel it is easier to judge...

christian370z 02-23-2012 12:19 PM

Is it ghetto? Hardly. I back mine in all the time for the reasons others have stated, it's easier and safer as long as you are proficient in parking in one try.

SS66 02-23-2012 12:48 PM

Not Ghetto at all. It is something everyone should do occasionally. Along with parallel parking and parking in general. All of us have seen some pretty crappy drivers out there with a valid drivers license.

nmjaxx9 02-23-2012 12:51 PM

Im a backer. Especially at places I wanna get the hell out of really fast after Im done, for example, like work. :icon17:

elmz 02-23-2012 01:02 PM

I think its pretentious to back into a spot every time you park. I wouldn't call it ghetto, but it does draw more attention. Personally, I only back in if it's beneficial for me to get out later with less hassle, or at car meets where you want to showcase your car, hence draw attention.

icormba 02-23-2012 01:13 PM

It’s only ghetto when you back in and take up 2 spots.

I have become accustom to backing in due to living in a condo in which a wall blocked my driver side door from opening if I were to park forward. One attempt and done… it actually takes me a couple tries to park forward “just right” and I have been driving for 25 years! Haha!

ClemsonWill 02-23-2012 01:22 PM

Whenever I think about it I back in. It's so much safer when pulling out. Plus the back up camera makes it so I don't hit anything behind me.

I really don't get how it's pretentious. Why would backing in draw any more attention than pulling in straight? Perhaps if you were impeding traffic flow, I can see that being an issue...but otherwise....

Cmike2780 02-23-2012 01:40 PM

I always back into my driveway. The damn chin spoiler always scrapes if I park heading in...funny enough, it doesn't if I back into the driveway. In parking lots, it doesn't really matter because I park far away from any other car anyways.

I don't pull out, but my couch does.

BlackZeda 02-23-2012 01:42 PM

It's safer, but coming from driving pick-ups I find driving in reverse to be a bit of a challenge. I do practice occasionally and am getting better...the blind spot is crazy! I can parallel-park like a madman though :)

mantella87 02-23-2012 02:39 PM

The last thing I'd associate with the word "ghetto" is backing into a parking spot. I've never even heard of this. I must be missing something, or I haven't been exposed to the areas where this notion is supposed to come from. But come to think of it, I've never backed my Z into a parking spot once. At my old job I used to back my RX-8 into my spot because it was easier to make sure any other vehicles leaving/entering have gone by me.

Went to a Mini meet with my wife and everyone backs in to show off their front badge (it's a Mini thing I guess).

I have to back into my driveway as well, but cannot enter it square. I have to back in at an angle, otherwise I will scrape. :ugh2:

alcheng 02-23-2012 03:51 PM

I back-in, 99.999% of the time.

They don't know how to back-in to a parking so they call us 'ghetto'

It is ghetto, if they don't park the car within the square. LOL

Combat parking :p You always stage your vehicles that way especially on QRF so you can respond quicker.

happytheman 02-23-2012 03:59 PM

Yeah, that's why I park my Z like that! "Be Prepared" I always say! :rofl2:

Mikes350z 02-23-2012 04:05 PM

I back the Z up into almost every spot unless in a hurry and then ill just throw it into a spot. I like to back it in because easier to pull out of the spot and i can see right away where all other cars are. Z has bad blind spots backing up. Calling it "Ghetto" seems pretty absurd to me.

TheGreatOne 02-23-2012 04:45 PM

Now that I think about it, I probably back in most of the time...whenever I have my wife with me she would say "oh, so you think you're cool??" lol. Hater

I think the only times I park forward is when I want to admire my exhaust on the walk back to my car :)

I dont even understand what the whole point of this thread is for. Who cares if its ghetto or not. Youre not bothering/troubling anyone but yourself.

....and ghetto? Really? How does the way you park justify if youre "ghetto" or not. Lousy parking, lazy parking, sloppy parking, now that makes sense, but ghetto parking?

The point was to get people to talk about it, and they have good sir! :)

This topic also started in the F.I. thread so we just continued it here

happytheman 02-23-2012 05:32 PM

Yup, good point Zman.

Felix 808 02-23-2012 06:57 PM

I vote indifferent. Sometimes I back in so that I can have a better visual when puling out into traffic like at a roadside cafe.

Heck call me ghetto if you want, I'm not out to impress anyone, too old for that.:tiphat:

I understand that. parking straight in vs backing into a parking space makes sense as a topic, but how is it considered ghetto?
