Computer is irritating the piss out of me
Ok, so I finally got my desktop setup after it sat for a little over a year while I was deployed and moving. Here is what is really pissing me off and I'm hoping somebody here can help me out. My computer hangs for some unknown reason. I thought it was hanging when it was in sleep mode so I disabled it. It still hangs now, just that when it happens now I stare at an image on the screen. Sometimes I can see and move the mouse, but nothing happens when I use it or when I try to use ctrl-alt-dlt. I'm currently in the process of updating drivers to see if that helps. I just updated the driver on my GeForce GTX280 and once that is finished, I'm going to install the 100+ updates from microsoft. Oh, there was also one BSOD but it restarted to fast for me to catch what caused it. I am also going to try updating the MB drivers as well. This is really starting to irritate the crap out of me. If anyone has any ideas on what I can try I would be thankful for the help.

So I have updated the video drivers. Currently in the process of getting 116 windows updates installed. I think once that is finished I'll move on to the drivers for my sound card and check to see if there is anything for the MB.

Hanging issues def sounds like a graphics card driver issue or possibly a graphics card hardware issue. If the driver update doesn't work, I would try re-seating the graphics card. Make sure the contacts are clean. Last try would be swapping out the graphics card with the on-board if it has one or if you have a spare to see if that's the cause. Do all the software updates first though.

So far it has run for a couple hours no problem. When I checked the drivers for the video card, they had a new one released back in October, got it installed and I think it should be just about finished with the windows updates. Then I 'll wait and see how it goes, if it is still running in the morning when i get up, I'll consider it good to go.

If only that were true Mac's are far from perfect and you still get plenty of crashes, especially when working with graphic heavy applications.

To the OP, your issue does sound like a hardware issue. Graphics card is what I thought initially as well. The software updates or even a format could fix things though.

Well, I got up this morning and Windows Media center had stopped responding. Fortunately it was just WMC and I was able to force close WMC w/o having to do a hard restart. I've considered a Mac but for now I'll keep the current setup of a WIndows desktop and MBP. There are a few things I do on the desktop that I can't get software for on the Mac.

If the computer starts freezing up hard, i.e. no response, frozen screen, then typically in my experience this is a hardware problem. Check that the cooling fans for the CPU and graphics card are functioning correctly, I've seen the fans go out in as little as one year in a dusty furry environment. If the computer was recently moved around then consider re-seating the CPU with a clean and fresh layer of thermal paste and re-seat the add-in cards.

problem is it could be 1 of 1,000,000 issues. If you have all your data backed up, i would just do a fresh install. |

Yeah, backup your data and reinstall your OS. See how things go then.

The issue is your paying double the price for the same hardware that a PC uses. So essentially you are paying a premium for the OS or Name. And with a little bit of knowledge (what not to do), a PC can run just as well. My 4 year old PC i built still runs like a champ. |
