Default Deer Hunting?

Anyone on here deer hunt? This was my first time Deer hunting with a rifle. It was fun. I went to my father-in-law farm this past weekend and camped out there for 6 days. Man it takes a lot of patience and time sitting in that tree stand...my butt is sore lol. But I got my first deer on the 5th day at 10am...its not the biggest deer but its meat on the table for my wife and I

I am not able to do it this year due to the university...I love the hunt, I love the animals, nature, the magic quality of it all and of course the food. I don't understand trophy hunters though, they irk me. I believe trophy hunters lose the connection between hunter and prey and the reverence for the animal itself.

I would love to go hunting for a deer, Only problem is I would have no place to keep the meat. That and I would need somebody else along that would know how to field dress it.

A buddy of mine recently made venison chili for a dinner party. It was awesome.

After most people had tried some, he went and grabbed a pic of him with the deer he shot. He was walking around going, "This is the chili." I thought it was awesome/hilarious. A couple people got upset, but that just made me laugh harder.

That deer was delicious as chili.

I grew up with venison as our red meat, sometimes intermixed with bear, elk, etc. And fish was our alternative. The only meat we really bought from the store was chicken and bacon as a kid. Venison chili and venison shepherds pie are two my favorite dishes to this day.

Plus venison is healthier than beef and pork.

I've always seen/done it this way. Usually we bleed it in the field (cut the neck and try to let a lot of the blood out), then string it up head down back at camp to finish draining and to cut it open from the butt down, remove all the nasty parts until the core of the deer is basically empty, and then skin it there on the rack, and then quarter it up (and cut a few other choice bits, like the backstrap filets) and put it in a freezer.

Nice hit. I go but I haven't gone this year due to work. The best part is when u r sitting on the treestand and u hear little noises and ur eyes are trying to look being your head. One time it was like 4:30 am and I'm on the stand all of a sudden I see things droping from the trees across from me and I was like WTF. It was turkys. I found later that day that they ball up and sleep on trees and they drop down when they wake up. I can't wait to go small fame hunting that's fun as well

I have never skinned head down...weird. we hang it for a couple days head up in the wisconsin winter, high enough so the wolves can't reach , then after the first week of season, we skin. weird. maybe my family does it wrong. haha never know.

Well I'm down in TX. Even in good cold hunting weather, once the sun's up a deer is going to spoil here if you haven't already moved it to cold storage, so we don't really have the option of just hanging them out in the elements for a few days. As for the rest of it, my understanding is that draining as much blood as you can ASAP, keeps the meat more tender and tasting better (less gamey). So that's why we cut the throat (carotid arteries) in the field and bleed immediately, and then that's also why we hang it upside down (to continue the bleeding process).
