I know Texas is just fine on it's own. I'm surprised they 'allowed' their joining of the US. Would have figured they'd attempt to maintain their solitude as a sovereign state?

You need to realize the people who found Mexico for an independent Texas were colonizing Americans. That's why the Texans wanted to joint the states. Also they would have been a little country between to big powers fighting for an identity.
