To play music on your personal youtube videos do you have to have permission due to copyright.

My friends said his father in law posted a vid with a song he already owned but youtube sent him a email saying they removed it for he didn't have permission to use. How does all that work?

its all copyright laws. Depending on where you live, the song, etc etc. Theres some tracks that get removed from YouTube entirely. Tell him to use a different soundtrack, or make your own bootleg remix of it

YouTube is dumb like that. Ive had audio removed by them in some of my videos... Doesn't make sense. I use A LOT of non mainstream music so if anything it helps those artist's get some recognition, yet they block it. It's not like I'm selling my videos for profit.
