Two words for that sleazy dealer: RESERVE PRICE

How stupid does one have to be to not list a reserve price? It's one of the most basic concepts of an auction. It says, "minimally, I'll accept X dollars for my item." All they had to do was list a reserve price, and then decide at the end of the auction whether they'd accept a low-ball offer or move on. It's not like auctions are a novel concept or anything.

I'm glad they caved to the pressure, but they should have just given dude the car from the word go.

And if this happened to a member of this forum, we'd react the same. We'd light up the dealership and every auto mag in town.

Well being as they only have 1 feedback they were apparently new to ebay and had no idea what they were doing, and thought they can refuse to sell the car if they sold it local for a better price. Scumbag dealers.

Yeah, but car dealers go to auction all the time. Where do you think used cars go if they don't sell? The concept of going to auction and setting a reserve price should not be new to them.

Similar thing happened a couple of years ago on a BMW M5 a guy won.

I won't say the dealer "honored" the price. Like in this case he finally caved.

If I remember correctly, the dealer took a HUGE hit on that one. Somewhere between 10 and 20K I think.

I think a lot of times, dealers put younger guys who are "web savvy" in charge of their internet sales who aren't auction and sales savvy.

Unfortunately, though, it could very well be bait-and-switch tactics. Car dealers are not above using those. Twice I've had salesman advertise a price that, after a little talking, was a "mistake", when the true price of the vehicle is a couple thousand more. We could blame human error or underhanded practices, but the end result was that someone came to look at the vehicle.

It's quite unfortunate that people will lose their jobs over this, and legal action may come about; all for a minuscule fraction of a percent of the dealership's monthly numbers. Sometimes makes me wonder how General Managers can be paid so much and then make decisions like this.

I remember this happening when the new M3's came out. Dealer wanted like 10K over MSRP, and the guy won it for 10-20K under.

The same thing happened. Internet uproar... BBB... ebay gets pissed.... Dealer finally has to sell the car for that price plus they lose a lot of future business in the process.
