Netflix: 2011 Plan Changes

For those unaware, Netflix is changing its pricing plans soon.

Second, we are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into separate plans to better reflect the costs of each and to give our members a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan or the option to subscribe to both. With this change, we will no longer offer a plan that includes both unlimited streaming and DVDs by mail.

So for instance, our current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming), for $7.99 a month.

Yep. I've already downgraded to no longer receiving movies by physical mail. I generally stream movies and tv shows more anyway. So I'll just save myself 2-3 bucks a month.

Wasn't impressed with the mail service anyway. They weren't sending me anything from the top of my queue, and only a few times did they send me Blu Ray, even though I had to pay extra for that.

I'm also going to downgrade the account to streaming only.

Netflix's ultimate goal is to have all their content streaming, but they better get their act together because it seems I always find problems when I go to watch something. Subtitles missing..Missing audio tracks, etc.

Yeah, the Subtitles are still only 70% or so of their streaming which needs to be fixed. I believe they said by the beginning of 2011 they would have 100% subtitles for all streaming but still not true.

I just do the streaming now...its either get it on netflix or go to quicksilverscreen

I went from 3 movies to 2. I'd switch over completey, but the streaming quality sucks compared to bluray, especially with a projector. Not to mention the shitty B movies.

No wonder people are switching to other vendors. Stupid move on Netflix, which basically opens the door to other streaming services.

Ive always done just streaming.

I'm dropping. Back to Bittorrent. Netflix had a great thing, but all good things must come to an end.

I will play the opposite, Netflix even with both plans (which I will be keeping) is still the best deal on the market for movie/TV shows. No cable, online provider, etc. has matched what Netflix offers currently. Will it stay this way forever? Probably not, but until then Netflix is still winning even with all the people leaving.
Also, this is in the end most not entirely Netflix's doing. The movie studios all have contracts up for renewal this year and have been demanding massive increases from Netflix to continue streaming/DVD service.

Their profits have certainly already taken a huge hit. You've got people dropping the mail service, the streaming service, or netflix altogether. I only know a few people who are just sitting back and taking the price increase.

I still hope they succeed in the long run. They changed the game. Before them it was risky P2P or blockbuster. But I can't see the short-term logic in the move.

Yeah, I knew the reasons behind the price hike and they are still offering a good deal. I just don't feel like doing it anymore. My recent streaming has gone way down and I never really do DVD by mail. I just Bittorrnent like nuts and I watch TV. My cable suffices pretty well, not to mention my Xbox with racing games and shooters.

I have cut down on gaming in the past few years, to almost nothing and moved more towards movie/TV shows.
Unfortunately I had to give up any illegal movie access or streaming, cannot take the risk anymore.

I game or stream almost exclusively. I had to give up questionable legal practices 8 years ago because of work.

I would gladly go to 100% streaming with Netflix if they would offer a real streaming collection, but the current selection is just pitiful and not even worth the 8 dollars in my opinion.

I disagree to an extent. My Instant Queue is overflowing, in part because I don't waste time on current TV shows. I hate commercials and having to wait a week between broadcasts. I like to consume entire seasons without interruption. But it's also quite large, because there's a treasure trove of obscure movies in there that are highly underrated for one reason or another. A little internet browsing here and there will uncover some movies that you'd never think would be so good. I've wasted hours marveling at modern Korean Cinema, for example.

But I do agree that they need to buff up their collection. For them to make this move, the words "Disc Only" should no longer appear ever.
