Mac OSX Lion released today
It's available in the Mac App Store for $29.99. It took 30-45 minutes to download [over 3.4 gigabytes] and 35 minutes to install on my iMac.
Has anyone else gotten it? So far, it's been pretty neat although there are some things to get used to: -Scrollbars appear only when scrolling -Scrolling up and down with a touchpad or MagicMouse is 'backwards' from a normal scroll wheel now - this is supposed to make it like an iOS app. I'm going to see if I can get used to it. Otherwise, they have a checkbox to go back to normal. -Supported apps can go into Fullscreen mode with an icon on the top-right of the app. (or Control-Command-F) -You can gesture between Full-screen apps and your spaces, etc. -"Back" and "Forward" in the browser can be done with a gesture and it actually sort of 'slides' the previous page into view seamlessly... really cool for this forum. -Mail, iCal, etc are set up nicer. Mail looks like the iPad app now. A super in-depth review of Lion can be seen here: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: the Ars Technica review (it's 19 pages long :o ) Any other neat things you found? |
Have you found any compatibility problems with older apps?
I got a notice awhile back that one of my old apps wouldn't run on it. No big deal because I don't use it anymore anyway, but I'm curious to see what others run into before I bump it up. I've been so busy, I missed that it was coming out today. No wonder my stock went kaboom! |
Lion doesn't support any PowerPC legacy applications. Otherwise all my stuff runs the same or better. I was skeptical, but I have to admit the app-store-download-and-install thing was pretty slick.

edit: I don't run any "older" apps |

I tell ya' that reverse scrolling is eating my lunch at the moment. I go back and forth between Win 7 and OS X and I always go the wrong way the first swipe. I had two PowerPC aps that wouldn't run, but they were replaced with more current versions (for free - cool). Some of the new gestures didn't sit too well with me, but I changed them in preferences. I don't really like the "leather look" of iCal and Contacts, but I can live with it. Facetime wants to use the contacts from my work Exchange server (all 3000 of them) instead of my personal contacts and I can't figure out how to change that.
Overall, though, I'd say it's a good upgrade with some nice improvements but with a learning curve. |

I'm peeved I have to move to snow leopard before I can download.
|
Realized I could have gotten a free upgrade since I got my Mac after June 6, 2011. Trying to get a refund now through their support team.. we'll see.
Friend o mine is noticing slowdowns while in Photoshop CS5. Anyone else experience slowdowns? |
Just got this yesterday. Pretty cool so far and worth the $30 upgrade. I dunno if I really like the inverted scrolling though. I only got to play around with it for a short time, so I can't really evaluate just yet.

I'm liking the new features. I have noticed one issue so far Safari is sucking all my ram and almost doubles the cpu temp and is running my fans at full blast, and when I try to quit safari it freezes and I have to force quit it. I'm currently having to use chrome till this gets resolved. Anyone else notice safari issue?
|
I just upgraded. I could have driven across town to the Apple Store, bought a disc, gotten dinner, visited the zoo, gotten a massage, detailed my car and updated my will and still would have taken less time than it took to upgrade. I sure hope it is worth it.
Besides it taking forever to upgrade, I'm anxious to see the differences. |
I noticed they moved the Library folder...or renamed it. Anyone know anything about this? That folder is one of my "go to" folders for troubleshooting...

From a search: "For all products, items stored in the Library folder in Mac OS X Lion are now hidden. To view the Library folder in Mac OS X Lion: From the Finder menu bar navigate to Go > Go to Folder. Type: ~/Library Click Go, and you will be presented with a Finder window with the Library folder as the active location." |

They also took away Rosetta, so you can't use any legacy programs. Another thing I found that would be useful is File Vault's new feature. You can encrypt whole disk drives now instead of just your Home folder. But I'm guessing you'd have to format the disk you want to encrypt first. |
Be VERY careful with File Vault. Because of the way that it does things recovery can be difficult if you have to reformat. It took well over a week to figure out how to get the encrypted files unencrypted and moved to a clean disk. They had been backed up with Time Machine. There was quite a bit of time getting up close and personal with the command line in doing so and I was nearing the stage of giving up hope that my 4500+ pictures would be recovered. In the end I got most of them with the exception of the last couple week's worth so I was very happy.
My understanding is that some of the things that lead up to this near disaster with File Vault have been corrected (files are now encrypted on the fly and back ups to Time Machine happen on the fly as well rather than at system shutdown) but I'm very leery of having to repeat my experience with it. I installed Lion on a Mac mini late last night (yeah, I gotta life don't I?) and will check the apps to see if it's broken anything sometime today. With heat indexes near 130 I sure as Hell won't be outside! |

I'm not seeing massive memory usage and my CPU temps actually seem to be a little lower (130 degrees right now) as well as battery usage. Not sure about the battery usage though. |

I don't know if it would help, but you might go to the Library>Caches folder and pitch out everything that is in them. I say them because there is one of these folders in the main library and in the individual users folder. I stumbled on this a couple of months ago and it helped with some speed issues that I had been running into. |
A couple of things. Here's how to permanently unhide the Library folder:
In terminal type the following command and hit enter: chflags nohidden /Users/<Username>/Library” Where it says <Username> you would substitute your username on the computer. Once the command is completed type “exit” and hit enter then close Terminal. I host my webpages on one of my Macs and the upgrade killed the web hosting. Turned out that it apparently TURNED OFF "Web Sharing" in the Sharing Control Panel. Thankfully an easy fix once I figured out go take a look there. |
I don't know if you guys use Mail for RSS feeds, but it's got a neat feature. If you scroll to the bottom of a post to "Read More" and put your cursor over the link, an arrow shows up. If you click on the arrow, the thread pops up. You can't post to it in Mail, but you can read it.

Thanks for the great info CraigP!
Triple's, have you tried holding Alt/Option and opening Safari? It should try to open it without addons. That's really strange that they'd leave it broken for this long... |

I've read there are a number of problems and mine is one of them. I don't feel like reloading from scratch so I'll just use Firefox for the time being I also have chrome and neither of these have issue's. |
Update! I deleted safari and reinstalled it with the 5.04 ver before the latest update to 5.1 and it seems to be working perfectly fine now :)
I'm thinking it's the latest update thats causing issue's I'll hold off on updating for a while till there an update to my particular issue. |

It Now won't let me install the latest 5.4 upadate since I'm Now on Lion, And not on Snow Leopard :shakes head: I'll wait for another Safari update to be pushed out for it to ask me to update. Thats was my only issue and since it's running fine Im cool. |

I've owned my MB Pro for a little over a year and I'm still getting used it. The last thing I want to do is start all over again. That being said, I'll probably give Lion a shot before the year is up.

I can't remember, but is there an equivalent in Unix/Terminal variable to Window's %username%? If there is, I can probably just use Apple Remote Desktop to send the Unix command to all the Macs at work. |
Found this tidbit via Lifehacker:
