Mac OSX Lion released today
It's available in the Mac App Store for $29.99. It took 30-45 minutes to download [over 3.4 gigabytes] and 35 minutes to install on my iMac.
Has anyone else gotten it? So far, it's been pretty neat although there are some things to get used to: -Scrollbars appear only when scrolling -Scrolling up and down with a touchpad or MagicMouse is 'backwards' from a normal scroll wheel now - this is supposed to make it like an iOS app. I'm going to see if I can get used to it. Otherwise, they have a checkbox to go back to normal. -Supported apps can go into Fullscreen mode with an icon on the top-right of the app. (or Control-Command-F) -You can gesture between Full-screen apps and your spaces, etc. -"Back" and "Forward" in the browser can be done with a gesture and it actually sort of 'slides' the previous page into view seamlessly... really cool for this forum. -Mail, iCal, etc are set up nicer. Mail looks like the iPad app now. A super in-depth review of Lion can be seen here: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: the Ars Technica review (it's 19 pages long :o ) Any other neat things you found? |
Have you found any compatibility problems with older apps?
I got a notice awhile back that one of my old apps wouldn't run on it. No big deal because I don't use it anymore anyway, but I'm curious to see what others run into before I bump it up. I've been so busy, I missed that it was coming out today. No wonder my stock went kaboom! |
Lion doesn't support any PowerPC legacy applications. Otherwise all my stuff runs the same or better. I was skeptical, but I have to admit the app-store-download-and-install thing was pretty slick.

edit: I don't run any "older" apps |

I tell ya' that reverse scrolling is eating my lunch at the moment. I go back and forth between Win 7 and OS X and I always go the wrong way the first swipe. I had two PowerPC aps that wouldn't run, but they were replaced with more current versions (for free - cool). Some of the new gestures didn't sit too well with me, but I changed them in preferences. I don't really like the "leather look" of iCal and Contacts, but I can live with it. Facetime wants to use the contacts from my work Exchange server (all 3000 of them) instead of my personal contacts and I can't figure out how to change that.
Overall, though, I'd say it's a good upgrade with some nice improvements but with a learning curve. |

I'm peeved I have to move to snow leopard before I can download.

Realized I could have gotten a free upgrade since I got my Mac after June 6, 2011. Trying to get a refund now through their support team.. we'll see.
Friend o mine is noticing slowdowns while in Photoshop CS5. Anyone else experience slowdowns? |
Just got this yesterday. Pretty cool so far and worth the $30 upgrade. I dunno if I really like the inverted scrolling though. I only got to play around with it for a short time, so I can't really evaluate just yet.

I'm liking the new features. I have noticed one issue so far Safari is sucking all my ram and almost doubles the cpu temp and is running my fans at full blast, and when I try to quit safari it freezes and I have to force quit it. I'm currently having to use chrome till this gets resolved. Anyone else notice safari issue?

I just upgraded. I could have driven across town to the Apple Store, bought a disc, gotten dinner, visited the zoo, gotten a massage, detailed my car and updated my will and still would have taken less time than it took to upgrade. I sure hope it is worth it.
Besides it taking forever to upgrade, I'm anxious to see the differences. |
I noticed they moved the Library folder...or renamed it. Anyone know anything about this? That folder is one of my "go to" folders for troubleshooting...

From a search: "For all products, items stored in the Library folder in Mac OS X Lion are now hidden. To view the Library folder in Mac OS X Lion: From the Finder menu bar navigate to Go > Go to Folder. Type: ~/Library Click Go, and you will be presented with a Finder window with the Library folder as the active location." |
