I was reading the reputation thread that AK posted earlier this morning. Is it wrong to remind people to leave rep if they think it's deserving or is it just wrong to ask for rep for something?

ie - if you like dont forget the rep

compared to ----

hey give me some rep for that...

Hey.

My take on rep is much like you said-- it's there to identify who helps others as sort of a, "hey, pay attention to this guy because he knows what he's talking about."

Unfortunately, it always digresses into a popularity contest. For that reason, I'm not a fan of it-- I've been on a few forums that had it & got rid of rep & life went on.

Rep isn't a bad system, but it's really just a fun thing, nothing to take seriously.

I got my rotors turned, pads installed, & Hotckis antisway bars installed. Car feels great.

Well said. The only reason I like having my rep up is so that people know who the reputable/trusted people are for different types of info. I myself usually try to steer clear of people that don't have too many posts or a good amount of rep when it comes to finding out pertinent info.

Truthfully, it's not a good way to really tell who knows his stuff, just who's on the forum a lot. Invariably, anyone who spends a lot of time on a site will have a lot of rep (which is why nogoodname has more than anyone-- he never sleeps).

There are plenty of people who read far more than they post, but are suspension gurus or turbo experts, etc. That guy won't have many rep points, but shouldn't be discounted.

Take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Generally speaking, the ones who SOUND like they know what they're talking about do.

I'm no certified mechanic myself, but I know my way around just about any motor and or car for that matter. I'm also a pretty good source for car audio. Of course no one cared to know any of that until I became a prem member and built up some rep.

That being said Moo Cow, I know that the more reputible people on this forum know more about the Z than anyone else. I'm not talking about who is what kind of guru but just the people that can be trusted with having knowledge of a specific car.

That's something else I like about this forum more so than others... we can all sit around and talk about anything we want and usually it doesn't end up being anything more than a conversation. Other forums are like internet fight clubs full of little shits who think they know it all.
