The hardest part about learning to drive MT... is finding someone willing to teach you.
They need patience plus a car they don't really care too much about. I learned on a 1990 subaru justy. 3 cylinder, about 70 hp and the 0-60: N/A |

I learned in a '73 Alfa Romeo Berlina when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I used to badger my dad to take me up to the high school football stadium parking lot (huge, empty gravel lot) and let me drive around.
When I turned 15 I drove the family everywhere. My dad said I'd get tired of driving in about six weeks or so. Thus far he was off by 22 years and counting. |

I learned on an 01 Eclipse Spider. I drove it about 4 hours on my own and then I got it to my house. (Stalled it only once thank god.)
But the next day I took it to work, which was over 2 freeways in bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way to downtown Los Angeles where there are plenty of steep hills... It took me just that one day to learn stick! LOL I have a 90 300zx you can learn stick on if you want... But you'll need to come out to Los Angeles! I've already taught 2 people how to drive stick on it... EDIT: Just so you know, the Eclipse wasn't my car, but it was my idea to trade cars with my friend for a few weeks so I could get used to driving stick. He messed my car up good... Sadly I gave him his car back in BETTER condition than it was when I got it. He owes me seats and a transmission.

I learned to drive MT in my 96 Civic sedan. I think it was easier learning by myself rather than having someone teach me. My mother just said what to do with my feet and that was it. I practiced doing this... first, stop, reverse, stop, first, stop, reverse, stop, etc. It took me a couple of hours to get the hang of it.

It usually takes about 5-10 minutes to understand what you're doing, and then another couple hours to get used to it and you can have it mastered in a couple weeks.

Of the Alfas here in the U.S., I'd suggest that you go for a '72-'74 GTV if you really caught the Alfa bug. That's the sweet spot. Stay away from the '81 Spider! And, anything Alfetta may end up a tragic story.
