get a radar detector for your back window?

xiven 07-24-2009 10:10 AM

the V1 works 360 degrees

use a radar gun on them and pull them over

xiven 07-24-2009 10:11 AM

i guess i would just play it safe and wait til there is no line of sight and then speed up

theDreamer 07-24-2009 10:11 AM

My understanding is that a radar should be able to zero it self while moving which would allow the cop to pick up your speed if traveling in the same direction.

Now the same idea can be figured for two cars traveling in an opposite direction, even after they pass each other, once the beam returns it will use a doppler calculation to determine your speed. I mean, all radar is technically inaccurate since it is based on a beam traveling over a distance and returning and then calculating the variables. More variables the great the risk of inaccuracy.

Not enough, you would have to have material that can both absorb and reflect the signal, and by reflect I mean redirect the beam to a different direction.

ok who wants to make the Z do this

You know, I actually applied to join the Gwinnett PD once. Didn't make it past the background check though.

In retrospect, I'm kinda glad I didn't. I would have taken a pay cut of about %50 and my hobbies are just too expensive to survive that.

xiven 07-24-2009 10:23 AM

Yeah I don't know how they survive on the money they make. OTOH, Gwinnett is cheaper to live than North Fulton.

When am i gonna get off this damn distinguished road and get a spectacular aurora around me?

That actually makes sense, I think. Assuming the cop has a radar gun pointing backwards, if the radar unit self-zeroes, then when it measures the speed of a car going in the opposite direction, it'll just read in the negative, right? In other words, if it says -60mph, then that just tells the cop that I was doing 60mph. Now let's say he does this on a car that is behind him and going in the same direction. If the reading was -10mph, it would just mean that the car was going 10mph slower than him. If it read +10mph, it would mean it was going 10mph quicker. In both cases, he'd just add or subtract it from his own speed to ascertain the other car's speed.

nogoodname 07-24-2009 10:47 AM

^^ i'm sure i just said that

theDreamer 07-24-2009 10:50 AM

I need to find a cop and make nice and test some of these theories and situations. I know many places now have front and rear facing radar guns but I am not sure how they report and what is displayed to the cop.

I would hope they are getting a report of +10 from a car in front of them and just tacking on from their speed.
