I am 22 years old and I am still not at the top of what I want my system or collection of music to be. I have met very few in my age range that understand the quality music of the past.
I had a 25 year old in one of my classes try to tell me what good quality sound was. I asked for a demonstration. He quickly threw on some 50 dollar sony "bass cans" on top of my ears and cranked up some crappy compressed music. After listening for 30 seconds. I took them off and gave my opinion. "Way to bright with the highs no mid range and way to much bass." He quickly replied that I did not know what I was talking about and told me to come to his car after class to hear his two 12's pushing 1000 watts......I kindly passed. Even in my side job as a car audio installer I have to sometimes explain to people what they really what in a system. I have had people come to me saying they have a unlimited budget and want the best. I kindly ask them a few questions including how do they get there music and in what format is it. After that main question is answered I explain to them how bad that would sound on a high end system. Most understand after some talking and explaining others think I am crazy. The sad or sometimes funny part is going to a audio store or in some cases best buy and walking into the listening room on a Friday afternoon where you see 16-20 year olds laughing at the high end speakers saying you call that bass. I almost want to tell them you have music all wrong.

Fairly well written article and makes some solid points about audiophiles and the future. My only concern is that while audiophiles do take the mainstream tech and improve on it. The future of all media (music, movies, etc.) is digital downloads, and while it leaves unlimited room for future quality and access to media. The ISP companies have full control on bandwidth and they believe they should make more money for this.
I would love to stop buying physical media, but until a few things get figured out digital media will not thrive.

The thing is cd's will probably never die. Even with digital taking over with strong audiophiles wanted the best uncompressed quality they will always look to solid media instead of digital or at least in the ripping over to digital in my case. Not to mention nothing like looking at your cd collection on the racks.
Lp's still live I can see cd's surviving as well. Of course the "connivence" crowd will always want things faster and smaller and not so much quality. Audiophiles are not a dime a dozen they are more like one our of every 100.

Nice the pic I posted is there old location. The new location is a solid wall all the way around and with 6 ft behind them and 6 ft from the sides of the wall. I am going to try sound absorbing frames this summer. I told my girl, if we move into a house I must have a dedicated room for these. I want the CLX's but that will be a long time. Next on my list is a Mcintosh amp.

I have never been real big on audio. I use a $50 set of dell 5.1 speakers on my computer and before that I used a set of $20 speakers.
I just guess that my brain does not appreciate high quality input and I am not much of an audio-type person. I know I don't learn well from listening and have always done better by watching/reading. I don't hesitate to spend big bucks on visual equipment. Ive always ran the highest resolution monitors (2560x1920 back in the CRT days) and 3840x2400 on one of my LCD's at work. To me visual quality is king and I will pay a premium for it. I guess I am a Videophile? Of course that shows up as a spelling mistake so maybe there is no such thing as a videophile? lol. |
