A lot of these comments make me wonder why you own a 370Z instead of a horse.
By the way, Nissan comes out with a new model Z every year, why aren't you buying it instead of riding around in last year's junk that doesn't even have a compass? The iPad is an in-between device, like my boss said, it is second best at a lot of things - but having the second best web browser, the second best eBook reader, the second best GPS, the second best spreadsheet editor, photo viewer, game player with you is pretty convenient. And don't fool yourself, it is going to be a heavy business device. We have physician using them for medical records access, radilogy imaging access and dictation. We have employees using them for remote desktop control, accessing corporate systems. We have them syncing to corporate email. The Xoom will need another version to catch up with the iPad 1. And a lot more developer action. Right now e Xoom doesn't do flash and it's SD card slot doesn't work, so I don't think it is an iPad beater. More importantly, like a recent TUAW story, if you are picking your tablet based on specs, you're doing it wrong. Otherwise you'd be driving a STi or GTI or Mustang 5.0, Corvette or Cayman, depending on which specs you like - the 370Z is like an iPad - second best at a lot of things, and that makes it a winner.

I think the voting speaks for itself, the majority of people here dont care, maybe that will mean shorter lines on launch day

Not going to happen, recent surveys show that iPad 1 second hand sales have jumped dramatically since the announcement of iPad 2. Meaning a lot of people are going to be getting the new one and then you add in the many you always wake for gen 2 from Apple.

I used to have an iPhone 3G and instead of getting the iPhone 4, I got the Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) and was excited about all the extra things I am able to do with Android OS. I rooted, turned it into 3G wifi hotspot, etc etc. And then.... the tinkering got old and I just want my damn phone to just "work".. I don't want to have to root... and the apps suck. Yes, large developer companies have ported their games to lots of OSes, but for the most part, the apps are nasty and full of bugs and crap - and they LOOK like crap - there are no standards to follow. 2cents.

Will be ordering mine online on the 11th as I am going to be out of the country. Otherwise I would be in a line somewhere.
I have been a long time early adaptor of technology. Have had all of the iPhone versions Some on day one, some a few months later. Same thing with most of the iPods. I have an older jailbroken iPhone just to have an iPhone to work wherever I go just by plugging in a local SIM. 8 months ago I was probably the only one with an iPad at my company. Now all of the executives have them, as well as most of the sales executives and staff basically hundreds of them. The company will be porting its communications suite to the iPad 2 by april now that there is a front facing video camera. The problem that my company has with the android platform is that there is no uniform hardware to build to (hence why we have our own tablet at the moment) the android tablet market will probably turn into the same thing that the phone market turned into. A half dozen companies making different hardware platform, all running different revs of Android software. Which makes application development interesting. I predicted the Android malware and virus problem a long time ago. As much as I dislike the strict rules of the Apple App store I understand where they are coming from. Android is going to turn into the same user experience that Windows currently enjoys, Malware and Virus heaven...

To the OP- I really like Apple products but I will never stand in line for one. I have friends that do for some reason. They are true fan boys that watch every keynote and treat Jobs like a god. I have (had) the first version and my wife stole it from me after Day 1. She likes the fact that she can have iBooks, Kindle and nook all in one device. Outdoor visibility leaves something to be desired but there are workarounds. It is the benchmark for all tablets though - in my opinion others are trying to replicate while at the moment Apple is innovating.

Apple applications are written in Objective C, a subset of the C language. Android apps are written in Java. Yes, some software vendors write applications for both platforms. The key is the language they are written in. Objective C is hard core on memory management. The other factor is Apple's control and testing of all apps that are published. Google's Market Place on the other hand is kind of like the Wild Wild West at the moment. I have learned not to chose sides in the Apple vs Android debate. Having had hands on with both devices, I like features on both. My only problem with Android is reliability. I have seen first hand an app go astray and you couldn't even make a phone call. I doubt they will ever reach Apples reliability due to the nature of the product and the multitude of hardware platforms they are trying to support. It doesn't matter though. We all win in the end because the competition makes it better for all consumers no matter what your choice. Competition is a wonderful thing! These are my opinions but they are based on almost twenty years experience working in IT. I am currently a Product Analyst and assist in product evaluation, selection and guide businesses with their product selections. When people at work walk by my office and say "What computer should I buy" I always answer with a question - "What do you need it to do?" Once they explain I make my recommendation based on their need. Not yet, but we are close... (insert Dr. Evil laugh here) NO! I prefer Geek. Nerd infers that you are inept in social situations but have the same technical ability of the Geek. HKYStorm and Dai- Apple is making huge inroads in the business/enterprise. VPNs and certificates are making connectivity to the enterprise seamless. I tested my iPad with VPN connectivity to a cloud running a virtual PC desktop a couple of months ago. It was pretty amazing. OMG I just posted this in a car forum... Last edited by torpedo2k; 03-07-2011 at 07:36 PM. |
